25 percent of 211 callers need healthcare
A recent Bloomberg article described that more Americans skip medical care to save cash.
United Way of East Central Iowa knows that assistance for healthcare is needed in Eastern Iowa. A local Health Needs Survey conducted in 2010 found that one in four 211 callers was in need of dental care, eye care or prescription assistance.
211 is a 24/7 United Way service that connects people in need with solutions.
According to the U.S. Census we know there are over 19,000 women in Linn County who have a yearly household income for one person or below of $27,225.
Of these women, 19.6% are uninsured and in need of affordable healthcare in Linn County.
United Way is helping to address access to healthcare within our community. In fiscal 2011, the United Way Women's Leadership Initiative allocated $143,000 to local free and low cost health clinics to serve low-income, uninsured women with 3,832 prescriptions, 599 medical co-pays, 125 dental and 97 eye exams and 58 received eye glasses.
"United Way's Women's Leadership Initiative is all about women helping women. By joining the Women's Leadership Initiative through this year's United Way Campaign we will be able to do even more," says Nancy Craig, Manager of Leadership Giving at United Way.
The United Way Women's Leadership Initiative has set a goal to raise $230,000 to increase our existing efforts and reach more women in need of healthcare . Also, last week, Margaret May Damen, a speaker and author on Women's philanthropic power spoke at a Cedar Rapids luncheon to a group of 170 women leaders on "Three Principles of Abundance" which includes: Every Women has a Legacy, Every Women is a Philanthropist and Every Woman makes a Difference."
