THE YOUNG LEADERS SOCIETY
What is the Young Leaders Society? The Young Leaders Society (YLS) is comprised of donors under the age of 40 who contribute $250 or more. A portion of the annual campaign dollars raised by YLS members support initiatives that target early childhood education and literacy programs. For the 2009 campaign, more than $555,000 was raised by 1,036 donors!
What are the benefits of being a YLS member?
Besides the opportunity to financially support United Way partner agencies throughout Eastern Iowa, YLS members can also participate in networking events and volunteer opportunities geared toward YLS members.
What specific early childhood education and literacy programs are supported by YLS?
A portion of dollars raised by YLS members is allocated to programs that foster personal, emotional and educational development in children. Many of these programs are part of an initiative called Born Learning.
Born Learning is a nationwide program focused on early childhood learning advocacy and provides tools to parents and caregivers to engage children in learning. Funding from the YLS supports the distribution of Born Learning education materials through St. Luke's and Mercy's newborn home visitation program. In addition, Born Learning Trails have been installed at Bever Park in Cedar Rapids and adjacent to Amana Elementary School in Amana. These trails offer a unique opportunity to engage children in activities designed to develop pre-literacy skills.
Young Leaders Society members provide occasional cleaning and painting for the area's two Born Learning Trails. | How are the programs sponsored by YLS dollars selected? A committee of Young Leaders Society members meets on a monthly basis to discuss funding opportunities, as well as other topics related to the promotion of YLS within our community. This committee works closely with United Way of East Central Iowa's Community Impact Team to identify focus areas that support early childhood education and literacy programs. Several new funding opportunities have recently been reviewed and approved by the committee, so stay tuned for upcoming announcements about these exciting new initiatives!
