May 12 is Day of Caring
Join Us at the Kick-Off Celebration
Start the 2010 Day of Caring off right by joining us at Kernels Stadium at 7:30 a.m. for free breakfast, great prizes, live music and lots of fun. Cedar Rapids Mayor Ron Corbett will be on hand to proclaim May 12 as "United Way Day of Caring" in Cedar Rapids.
All participating companies and agencies are invited to attend. Plus, this year we would also like to extend an invitation to all other United Way volunteers who are involved throughout the year and to anyone who would like to learn more about Day of Caring. Come out and join the fun. It's early, but it's worth it!

NALC Food Drive Saturday, May 8
On Saturday, May 8, letter carriers and volunteers will collect food for our local community during the annual National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Food Drive. The NALC Food Drive, sponsored in part by United Way, occurs across the nation and has been significant in alleviating hunger in America. It is the largest one-day food drive in the Greater Cedar Rapids area.
You can participate by placing a bag of non-perishable food items (no glass items, please) by your mailbox on May 8. It will be picked up by your letter carrier or a volunteer. Thank you in advance for your participation! |

Every year the Alzheimer's Association East Central Iowa Chapter recognizes individuals, businesses and groups who have worked wholeheartedly throughout the year to move the mission of the Alzheimer's Association forward. Awards are given in eight different categories. This year, United Way of East Central Iowa was presented with the Program Service Award for their work in achieving a stronger and healthier community through the Community Impact Program. VITA Program Announces Year End Results
The Central Cedar Rapids Weed and Seed Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, a free tax preparation and tax assistance program funded in part by UWECI, finished its largest filing season to date on April 15th. VITA completed 1,142 returns for the community, bringing in just over $1.8 million in Federal refunds. Since the program began in 2006, over $4.6 million in federal refunds have been returned to the Cedar Rapids community. In addition, the number of volunteers for the program doubled from 2009. Indeed, bettering the community can begin with a simple tax return. . |

New Eligibility Requirements for SNAP Program
Governor Culver has signed a bill changing the eligibility requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly Food Stamps). As a result, 26,000 additional working Iowans statewide and 2,691 families in UWECI's six county coverage area (Benton, Cedar, Iowa, Jones, Linn and Washington) are now eligible for benefits. United Ways of Iowa's Public Policy Committee helped lead the legistlative effort. The change means an additional $1.8 million coming into our communities, which will create $3.5 million in economic activity. The new guidelines will take affect July 1, 2010. |
