| Volunteer Your Way to
Better Health! |
Volunteers give of their time and talent with the intention of helping others, but did you know that as a volunteer you could receive greater benefits than those who get support from volunteers? According to the Corporation for National and Community Service report, The Health Benefits of Volunteering, "Volunteers report greater life satisfaction and better physical health than do non-volunteers, and their life satisfaction and physical health improves at a greater rate as a result of volunteering."
There is now research that indicates volunteers receive both social and health benefits from volunteering. Volunteers in the working phase of life may find a meaningful volunteer opportunity will reduce stress, provide higher levels of happiness and greater satisfaction in life. A retired person who volunteers can enhance their social networks, provide a purposeful role in their community and maintain their independence. And teens who participate in a volunteer activity on a regular basis develop better social skills, increase self-confidence and have stronger mental health.
Individuals that volunteer live longer and have lower rates of depression than those who do not volunteer. "Civic engagement and volunteering is the new hybrid health club for the 21st century that's free to join," added Thomas H. Sander, executive director of the Saguaro Seminar at Harvard University.
If you are looking for ways to improve your health, try searching for a volunteer opportunity at corridorvolunteers.org or call the East Central Iowa Volunteer Center at (319) 540-4810. |

Prairiewoods will be providing an evening meal and program to thank their volunteers.
During the month of April take a moment to say thank you to your volunteers by sending a note, giving them a call or a small token of appreciation. Or click here to download our volunteer recognition month poster.
