April is "National Volunteer Month" and a perfect time to recognize the tremendous ways thousands of people donate their time and talents to improve the quality of life in our communities. Thank you for all you do to help nonprofit organizations, churches, schools and individuals in need.

Well Women Week
United Way's Women's Leadership Initiative and Healthy Linn Care Network are sponsoring a spring Well Women Week, April 12-16. Women ages 19-39 with no medical insurance qualify for a free pap test. Women ages 40-64 with no medical insurance qualify for a free pap and mammogram. Income guidelines apply.

Services provided by: Jones Regional Medical Center, Mercy Women's Center/Mercy Mobile Unit, Planned Parenthood of East Central Iowa (Cedar Rapids & Monticello), RCI Imaging Center, St. Luke's Breast and Bone Health, St. Luke's Family Health Center (Iowa Health Physicians Vinton & Anamosa) and Vinton Family Medical Clinic.
 
Appointments are required and are available on a first come, first served basis. Call (319) 892-6019 to schedule an appointment.




United Way Welcomes New Staff Member 
United Way of East Central Iowa welcomes Nancy Craig as Manager - Leadership Giving. Nancy was most recently with Alliant Energy in Corporate Communications. Previous to Alliant, she spent 3 years with the Kirkwood Foundation as Annual Giving Director and 9 years with Rockwell Collins in Community Relations.
 
"I am passionate about the mission of United Way and looking forward to the chance to make a difference in the lives of others," says Nancy. "I am excited to get out into the community and connect others to United Way. I have always been impressed by United Way's work and am thrilled to be part of the team."
 
In her free time, Nancy stays active through biking and hiking, enjoy spending time with family and friends, and loves to read. She also enjoys traveling with her husband.

NALC Food Drive

On Saturday, May 8, letter carriers and volunteers will collect food for our local community during the annual National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Food Drive. The NALC Food Drive occurs across the nation and has been significant in alleviating hunger in America. It is the largest one-day food drive in the Greater Cedar Rapids area.
 
You can participate by placing a bag of non-perishable food items (no glass items, please) by your mailbox on May 8. It will be picked up by your letter carrier or a volunteer. Thank you in advance for your participation!




Power of the Purse Auction Items Needed

UWECI's Women's Leadership Initiative will host its third annual "Power of the Purse" Auction on Wednesday, June 16. Members, and those interested in joining, will be invited to bid on fabulous purses and other gift items. Proceeds from this event will support women's health projects in our community. Please consider donating a purse, gift certificate and/or product for the purse auction. Purses can be new or gently enjoyed and any value is accepted and greatly appreciated! If interested in donating, please contact Nancy Craig at (319) 398-5372, ext. 18 or ncraig@uweci.org.

Camp Wapsie is in the running for a $250,000 Pepsi Refresh Grant! The Camp is partnering with several other camps, including Camp Kitaki in Nebraska, for the "Summer of Big Fun."
