Hope 2010 is off to a great start for you! United Way of East Central Iowa kicked off the new year by hosting our Community Celebration where we announced that our annual fundraising campaign raised $10,330,000. This marks the third year in a row that we have surpassed the $10 million mark! Thank you to all of the organizations and individuals who contributed to our 2009 campaign. Because of the continued generosity of our local community, we will continue to invest in programs that empower people to become financially stable, help children and youth achieve their potential, and improve people's health. United Way of East Central Iowa and the Rotary Club of Cedar Rapids honored 20 area middle and high school students at the annual Remembering Martin Luncheon on Monday, January 18, at the Crowne Plaza Five Seasons Hotel. The students were selected by their school administration for their volunteer work, school attendance and positive behavior.
Judge Renee Sneitzer, Administrative Law Judge for the Iowa Department of Corrections, was the Keynote Speaker for the event. Judge Sneitzer congratulated the students and urged them to continue embracing Dr. Martin Luther King's values.

Day of Caring Brown Bag Lunch

Are you a nonprofit organization looking for volunteers this spring? Interested in learning more about United Way's Day of Caring? Bring your lunch and participate in the Day of Caring Informational Session on Thursday, February 11, Noon-1pm at United Way of East Central Iowa, 1030 5th Avenue SE. We will include tips on preparing for the Day of Caring, project ideas for your organization, discuss elements of a successful volunteer experience, and hear from agencies about their personal success stories. Agencies will also receive the necessary paperwork to fill out regarding their volunteer project. | Women's Leadership "Power of the Purse" Auction Items Needed
UWECI's Women's Leadership Initiative will host its third annual "Power of the Purse" Auction on Wednesday, June 16, 2010. Members, and those interested in joining, will be invited to bid on fabulous purses and other gift items. Proceeds from this event will support women's health projects in our community. Please consider donating a purse, gift certificate and/or product for the purse auction. Purses can be new or gently enjoyed and any value is accepted and greatly appreciated! Milestones Awarded Three-Year CARF Accreditation CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) International has announced that Milestones Adult Day Health Centers in Cedar Rapids and Marion have been accredited for a period of three years for Adult Day Services. The latest accreditation is the fourth consecutive three-year accreditation that the international accrediting body has awarded to Aging Services, Inc. This decision represents the highest level of accreditation that can be awarded to an organization and shows substantial conformance to the CARF standards. Cedar Rapids and Marion Milestones are both programs of Aging Services, Inc. |

Day on the Hill Join staff, board members and volunteers from United Ways across Iowa on Wednesday, February 10, from 7-9 am for United Way's Day on the Hill. Individuals will gather at the State Capitol in Des Moines to advocate for education, income and health, and other important items on United Way's public policy agenda. Individual and group meetings with legislators to follow.
