The Coalition Government & The Small Business
Our new coalition government has warned of several painful changes to be made this year, in a bid to reduce our significant overdraft and restore our fragile economy.
While it may seem like the initial changes are directly imposed on the public sector, especially quasi NGOs,there will be huge implications for many small businesses, especially those in the start-up phase. The harsh economic climate resulted in huge job losses, but ironically led to many individuals setting up their own business, and becoming entrepreneurs. Fortunately, several government-aided schemes have provided support and funding to these start-ups to get them off the ground, but with the proposed cuts, many of these new ventures might crumble under the strain of unsustained resources.

Notice To Deliver A Company Tax Return (CT603)
HMRC has indicated that from the 1st of July 2010, it will no longer issue Form CT603 (Notice to deliver a company tax return) with blank paper return forms and guidance notes.
At the moment, only companies without a tax agent, advisor or approved substitute return forms receive paper forms from HMRC. It has however explained that even companies in this category will cease to receive this form by the 1st of next month.
Company Tax Returns are filed for every accounting period, even if your company hasn't made any taxable profits. Although many companies now make submissions electronically, it will be compulsory to file all company tax returns online from the 1st of April 2011, and pay corporation tax electronically. Most small companies and organisations with simple tax affairs can use the free HMRC Corporation Tax online filing system to the company tax retun.
For more information, please visit the HMRC site or speak to your agent. |
How To Get A PAYE,NI & CT Calender & Avoid Penalties
HMRC issued its first PAYE late payment penalty warning letters on the 1st of June.
It has explained that companies may receive this letter the first time in the tax year HMRC believes PAYE payment is late. The letter, issued about 2 weeks after the payment date, is only a warning to inform companies that a penalty could be charged, and as it is not a penalty notice, there can be no appeal against it.
If payment is made in full and on time, after this warning, you may not be charged a penalty, but the next time you pay late, you may become liable to a penalty. HMRC also explains that in other circumstances, you may get a penalty, even if you do not get a letter.
To reduce the chances of being fined, you can use an interactive tax deadline tool on the HMRC site , for PAYE, National Insurance and Corporation Tax, that creates a calendar of your key tax deadlines for the next 12 months, which can be printed or saved for future reference. You will be asked questions about the type of business you have, the taxes you are liable to pay, and allows you to complete the process even if you are unsure of the answers to any of the questions asked. The entire process takes about 5 minutes and you can also sign up to receive regular email alerts as each date approaches.

Avoid Duplicate Payments & Processing Errors
IMTB has added a new product to the portfolio - App4AP a brand new web-based online diagnostic tool developed by our own software team. App4AP not only analyses historical data for up to the last 6 years and reports on potential duplicates and over payments but also provides a continuous monitoring service to ensure that errors are identified before payments to suppliers are made. Many payment duplicates and errors can go undetected as they can occur for a vast number of reasons, many of which are related to inconsistent invoice formatting and inaccurate data entry. Without bringing in external consultants and recovery teams, identifying duplicate payments can be a real problem for companies with hundreds of vendors and massive data volumes. For more information , please visit imtb.uk.com or call us on 0845 129 9907/8. |
