_______________________

Grace member Jack Parks died yesterday morning.  Visitation will be from 3-7 pm, Sunday, Oct. 14 at Drechsler Brown and Willliams Funeral Home. Located at 203 S. Marion St., Oak Park

The funeral will be held at 10 am on Monday, Oct.15 at Grace Church.  You may greet the family 30 minutes before the service.

Please keep Jack's loved ones in your prayers.

Grant, O Lord, to all who are bereaved the spirit of faith and courage, that they may have strength to meet the days to come with steadfastness and patience; not sorrowing as those without hope, but in thankful remembrance of your great goodness, and in the joyful expectation of eternal life with those they love.  All this we ask in the Name of Jesus Christ our Savior.  Amen.

From the Rector

All Saints' Day is fast approaching. To help us get ready I am including a little blurb about Saints from Wikipedia:

The veneration of saints in the Episcopal Church is a continuation of an ancient tradition from the early Church which honors important people of the Christian faith. The usage of the term "saint" is similar to Roman Catholic and Orthodox traditions. Those in the Anglo-Catholic tradition may explicitly invoke saints as intercessors in prayer. The saints are also recognized as examples in history of good Christian men and women. The Episcopal Church does not canonize individuals, holding instead that all baptized Christians are saints of God and have the potential to be examples of faith to others. Episcopalians pray for each other and for all Christians as members of the Communion of Saints, including both the living and the dead, since all are considered to be in the hands of God. With this understanding, a wide variety of Christians from various denominations and traditions are thought of as "saints" in the Episcopal Church, such as Martin Luther and Augustine of Canterbury. Others recognized as "saints", while not of major ecclesiastical significance, are rather examples of holding moral positions that may have compromised their acceptance by society at the time they lived. Such "saints" include William Wilberforce and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, for example.

The Episcopal Church publishes Lesser Feasts and Fasts, which contains feast days for the various men and women the Church wishes to honor. This book is updated every three years and notable persons are added to the liturgical calendar.

This is the calendar of saints and blessed found in the Book of Common Prayer and Lesser Feasts and Fasts; the relevant official resources of the Episcopal Church. This list reflects changes made at the 2009 General Convention. It lists provisional changes made in the new official list of feasts, Holy Women, Holy Men.[1]

Nosferatu

David Rhodes
, young Theatre Organist extraordinaire and current President of CATOE (Chicago Area Theatre Organ Enthusiasts), will assist in celebrating the 90th birthday of the 1922 Casavant organ at Grace Episcopal Church by playing a film accompaniment to the classic 1922 film NOSFERATU.  Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (translated as Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror; or simply Nosferatu) is a classic 1922 German Expressionist horror film, directed by F. W. Murnau, starring Max Schreck as the vampire Count Orlok.  The film is often found in lists of the 100 great films of all time.  The film, shot in 1921 and released in 1922, was an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, with names and other details changed because the studio could not obtain the rights to the novel (for instance, "vampire" became "Nosferatu" and "Count Dracula" became "Count Orlok").  The original score was composed by Hans Erdmann to be performed by an orchestra during the projection. However, most of the score has been lost, and what we can hear nowadays is only a reconstitution of the score as it was played in 1922. This is why so many composers and musicians have written or improvised their own soundtrack to accompany the film. David Rhodes will take this opportunity to weave famous pipe organ themes into the fabric of his movie accompaniment.

Grace Church will present David accompanying the movie during the Halloween Party extravaganza at Grace Church on October 31, 2012 beginning at 7:30 p.m.  Admission (pay at the door) is $20 for the movie, but is reduced to just $10 if you come in costume!  Spread the word!   Join the event on our Facebook page
