Dear friends,
Summer is here! Children are ending their school year and looking forward to their long break. Families are getting ready for their vacations to destinations of fun and relaxation, and I, your humble priest, will be taking three weeks off in late June and early July. Not to worry, though! I have an excellent supply priest, Fr. Sam Todd, who will be filling in those Sundays in my absence. Fr. Todd was one of my examining chaplains when I graduated from seminary just over 13 years ago. I was afraid of him then, but now I call him a friend and an excellent colleague. I know he is excited to be coming to St. Paul's.
In the hot summer months, church life seems to slow down a bit as people go on their vacations and such. That is not a bad thing, as the year goes through its cycles. Before long, things will pick up for the busy fall. Without valleys, there can be no peaks.
We are in the seasonal period after Pentecost known as ordinary time. That does not particularly sound exciting, but without the ordinary, there cannot be the extraordinary in life. The truth is, being connected with God is really never ordinary. God is extraordinary in every conceivable way. Throughout the year, we have the opportunity to live into the mystery of Christ in all aspects.
If and when you take time off for rest and relaxation, be sure to include spiritual growth as part of that exercise. Reading a good spiritual book can do a lot to help gain perspective on life during a time away outside of the normal box. We are people of body, mind and spirit, and we need to care for all three aspects of our personhood to be healthy and grow.
Whatever you will do this summer, always be prepared to enjoy the extraordinary. No matter where we are and what we are doing, God is always closer than we think.

Prayer Quilt Ministry
The lap quilts made by the ladies involved in the Prayer Quilt Ministry are given to comfort those in the hospital, hospice, shut-ins, a sick family member or someone who is grieving over the loss of a loved one. Each of these quilts are prayed over as they are being made and given a special blessing by Fr. Dove. If you know of someone who would be blessed by receiving one of these quilts, please contact Fr. Dove.
The quilters are also embarking on a project to decorate the walls of the Great Room in the Family Life Center with quilts.
The Prayer Quilt Ministry will be taking the summer off, but if you are considering joining them in this wonderful ministry, they will resume meeting on Monday, September 8th at 10:00 am in the Family Life Center. For more information, please call Virginia Doyle at (281) 579-7637.

EYC COLLECTING FOR MILITARY BOXES
The EYC needs your help! They need more names and addresses of your relatives who are military personnel serving anywhere in the world. A sign-up sheet provided for this is available in the narthex.
The youth of St. Paul's also ask your for monetary help to assist in buying items for these boxes. They are going shopping themselves for items needed to give them more of a connection with this project and to see just what the needs of our military overseas have.
The EYC is inviting anyone donating towards this cause, to also write a letter to include in the package. They are targeting sometime in June to mail out these boxes, so please get your donation to them as soon as possible.

Canon Andy Doyle Elected as Our Next Bishop
The
Rev. Canon C. Andrew Doyle, Canon to the Ordinary of the Diocese of
Texas (pictured left with Bishop Wimberly) was elected bishop coadjutor on the fourth ballot on May 24th at a
special session of the diocese's 159th Council. Doyle, 41, led in the
lay votes on the first and second ballot while the Rt. Rev. Dena
Harrison, Bishop Suffragan of Texas,
held the clergy lead. By the third ballot, the laity gave Doyle a
majority but it took another ballot for him to gain the majority from
clergy.
Canon Doyle and Father Dove are both graduates from the Virginia Theological Seminary Class of 1995, and they are both associates in the Fellowship of St. John the Evangelist.
We will begin praying for Andy as our bishop-elect during the prayers each Sunday. His date of consecration has not been set, but it will be sometime in the fall.
