Dear friends,

Fr. Mifflin DoveThe Easter season is drawing to an end as we approach the great day of Pentecost. This year, Pentecost falls on May 11th, which also happens to be Mother's Day.

Pentecost is the Greek name for the Jewish Festival of Weeks, the spring barley harvest celebration that occurred fifty days after the Feast of the Passover. It was the day according to Jewish tradition when God gave His law to the people. Pentecost is the day God chose to come upon the apostles in His personhood as the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who empowers and guides us in our mission and ministry. All of this is recorded in Acts 2:1-11.

PentecostSome of you may remember this day being referred to as Whitsunday, and the name has an interesting little story about it. Throughout our Church's history, Pentecost has traditionally been seen as a good day for baptisms. In ancient times, people wore white garments when they were baptized, and so the day was referred to as White Sunday. Our old English ancestors loved to shorten words, and so over time, the pronunciation became Whitsunday, short for White Sunday. Nowadays, the trend has been just to call this day Pentecost after the earlier Jewish festival.

Pentecost is the third holiest day of the Church year after Easter and Christmas. It is the birth day of Christ's Church, and it is a day to remember that God is with us always. Please plan to attend this very important feast day in the life of St. Paul's!
Vacation Bible School Slated for June 16-19
Son Harvest County FairThe theme for our 2008 Vacation Bible School (VBS) is Son Harvest County Fair. The VBS will run from Monday through Thursday of the third week in June from 9:00 a.m. until 11:30 am.

As she has done so wonderfully in prior years, Terry Wright is leading this ministry for us with enthusiasm. Let's do all we can to support her by stepping forward as teachers and helpers for some or all of the week!

Children's Chaplains Orientation Set for May 4th
In preparation for offering Children's Chapel every Sunday beginning in June, an orientation for the Children's Chaplains is set for Sunday, May 4th from Noon until no later than 1:30 p.m. Lunch will be catered by Jason's Deli for those who attend. To register online to attend this event, please fill out the registration form by clicking here.

Children's ChapelKaren Petry is going to lead our initiative to provide Children's Chapel on every Sunday. The Children's Chaplains will be adult lay ministers who work with the children during the Children's Chapel. They are required to have some training and to be certified in the Safeguarding God's Children program of the Diocese.

"I am very excited that we are moving in this direction," said Fr. Dove, "Our children need to grow in the knowledge and love of God, and offering this worship and learning experience will go a long way to help them do that."

The plan is for Children's Chaplains to commit to serve one Sunday each month for a year. After the year is up, they can decide whether to commit to another year.

Those who are trained to become Children's Chaplains will be commissioned to this holy ministry by Fr. Dove at the 10:30 a.m. service on May 18th.

If you have any questions about this very sacred ministry, please contact Karen Petry at (713) 332-8438 in the daytime. Her e-mail is kmpetry@aol.com.
