Alumni Newsletter
Welcome to our second CSS alumni e-newsletter ever! In an attempt to save trees and money, we would like to expand our use of this format to keep alumni informed and involved. Please forward this to your CSS friends if they say they did not receive it, and have them give us their email for our database so they get future communications.

Find Us on Facebook Of course, becoming a "fan" of The Colorado Springs School page on Facebook at www.facebook.com/TheColoradoSpringsSchool will bring you more regular news, as will periodically checking on the website: www.css.org.

If you have any questions ever, always feel free to contact Susan Robbins, Director of Alumni Relations at her direct line: 719-434-3503 or via alumni@css.org.

Alumni Association Scholarship Recipient

The Alumni Association in conjunction with the Annual Fund was challenged by a trustee to generate alumni donors and earn a $5,000 scholarship to be awarded in the name of the CSS Alumni Association. You earned it, and now we announce that Gabriel Yaakob, a senior, is the recipient of the first $5,000 Alumni Association scholarship. Because he embodies the energy, creativity, risk-taking (as a junior he got the lead in Our Town the first time he tried out for any theater production), character, empathy, initiative, and genuine kindness that CSS alumni show, he was selected as the inaugural recipient. Additionally, he is an accomplished young man. Since age six, he has worked in his father's auto shop. With the skills he has gained, he built a hydrogen fuel cell car with his math teacher, Dr. Paul Young. His involvements range from theater to president of our Model UN team to designing and building, with Tye Tutt '08, the base for the 200+ pound marble sculpture, Trumpet Flower, by Posie Crumpacker Nelson '65 which stands in the north entrance of Louisa Performing Arts Center. Gabe is deeply grateful for the honor and looks forward to meeting alumni on campus or during phonathons.
REUNION 2009

John Pitman

The reunion was a great success! We had the largest gathering of CSSG (the Girls' School, 1965-76) in years. Hooray to '69 and '74 for a great turnout and for all the other alumni from later decades who traveled thousands of miles to gather with friends and former faculty. John B. Pitman, teacher during most of those years, past Humanities teacher, Dean, creator of the Outdoor Program, co-creator of the Unit-Session Plan and Experience Centered Seminars was the honored faculty member.
Below is his thank-you:

Dear CSS(G) Alums,

Over the years, especially during the recent reunion,  I had the good fortune to find out how much the CSS years have meant to many of you. Clearly the school's philosophy/ programs provided experiences that empowered its students to face their futures with tested competence and confidence. To find out how some of your yesterdays shaped your tomorrows is indeed gratifying.

I received your welcome words of appreciation as a representative of the people of the school's initial era. The current CSS community owes thanks for its exciting existence to the trustees, Margaret Campbell, the faculty and the students of that challenging time.

Thank you for being and sharing what you have become. Thank you for a very special evening. You are special people from a special school.

Warmest regards,

John Pitman

Founders' Day
This October 13th will be our Founders' Day at CSS celebrating the history of the school, its character and values that continue today, and the accomplishments of those who have been a part of CSS. Each year a past member of CSS will be honored, and Val Morgan-Alston '69, MS, JD, RN, former judge and member of the US Department of Health and Human Services will be the first honoree. A trail-breaker in her own right, Val was a leader in many aspects of CSS, and currently is Health and Human Services regional manager (IL, IN, MN, MI, OH, WI) in the Office for Civil Rights based in Chicago. More details will follow by e-mail and through the CSS website at www.css.org.
Volunteers Wanted!

Here is an all-points bulletin for volunteers in every area! We can use your help if you are out of town or out of state or out of country. If you can commit some time to our various initiatives, we'd be grateful. Here are a few samples of how you might be involved:
  • Organizing calling/Facebook groups to rally your class or cluster to return for REUNION
  • Rallying your area alumni to attend or offering your living room/patio/deck to host out of state or regional CSS gatherings around the country.
  • Attending regional CSS events
  • Offering your contact information and yourself as part of a support network to CSS alums who are currently attending college in your area
  • Helping with our Club 150 annual fundraising initiatives (via phonathons, e-notes & thank-a-thons or fundraisers) to earn the next scholarship challenge

News on Campus!

First Alumni Admission Director: Tiffany Williamson '98 is now the new CSS Director of Admission and Financial Assistance. She is the first alum to serve as an administrator and with her inside knowledge as an alumna has many great ideas for growing and diversifying enrollment.

The Trianon: Thanks to capital improvement dollars, the downstairs windows in the Trianon are being scraped and repainted until each can get replaced/restored and the glass replaced with energy-saving materials. A foundation grant is helping to pay for the restoration of two more windows. Currently, one south window is being worked on, and the west windows of the Green Room and one Library window have been completed. During August and September, the small upstairs windows are being replaced for more energy efficiency.  Click here for some pictures of other facility improvements to our campus.

Erin Hyde '08
interned for the summer in our Communications Office, working especially with updating young alumni files and assisting in conducting a survey of recent graduates about their preparations for college.

Nikki Warner '04
is a CSS Fellow this year in the Admission and Communications Offices under the tutelage of Jessica James, Director of Communications and Public Relations.

Trianon Hallway Project

With the vision and hard work of alumni, the second floor south of the Trianon will become a showcase of alumni history. Headed by Candy Pierce-Covnot '82 and joined by Susan Vanderhoof Conde '69, Scott Berry '83, and Lowe Graver '82, the second floor hallway was repainted; additionally, Candy built frames for and she and her daughter, Robyn '13, matted and mounted CSS class and campus pictures by decade. Eventually, the second floor, will also feature a display area in which alumni talents will be showcased.
