Summer Family Nutrition Program: A Healthy Resonance
|
|

School is out, leaving only thoughts of summer play in the minds of children while thoughts of concern for their well-being linger in the minds of parents. During the summer months, families struggle with financial security and providing their children with nutritious food. Daily school meals helped parents in spring and fall, but summer remains a barrier to overcome. El Buen Samaritano helps fill this summer hole...

Volunteer Spotlight Sable Galindo

Sometimes a simple idea can have a big impact. This summer, Healthy Living and Human Services Department volunteer intern Sable Galindo took a simple idea and shaped it into a successful new program to benefit clients of El Buen Samaritano. As a graduating social work student of Texas State University, Sable came to El Buen to pursue her interest in client advocacy and put her passion for helping others into practice. Her summer internship with El Buen Samaritano provided a perfect fit.
“I observed that clients did not have enough money to pay for food or other basic needs,” Sable said. “I started to think that they probably could not afford the cost of toiletries, either.” She quickly got to work and designed a community-wide toiletry drive to provide free toiletries to clients. "I identified the YMCA as a great partner because they’re located throughout Austin and have a broad range of clients who could learn about the work of El Buen Samaritano,” Sable said. She contacted YMCA branch managers and even set an appointment to present the idea to the executive director.
In only a few months, the toiletry drive proved successful. She collected over 1,500 toiletry items including soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste and toothbrushes. Combined with a donation of dental items from St. David’s Foundation, she was able to create enough toiletry bags for a month’s worth of food pantry clients. Sable’s small idea planted seeds of support that will continue to grow in the months and years to come. We thank Sable for her dedication to the mission of El Buen Samaritano and for taking the initiative to develop the toiletry drive project. We also thank the many partners of the Austin-area YMCA for their support.

Community Partner Spotlight Episcopal Foundation of Texas

El Buen Samaritano Episcopal Mission is blessed to be one of the seven institutions of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas to receive support from the Episcopal Foundation of Texas every year. Since 1996, the Episcopal Foundation of Texas has provided more than $1.3 million to help support the programs and services of El Buen Samaritano, with most of their financial contributions supporting the education programs of El Buen Samaritano.
It is through the generous support of the Episcopal Foundation of Texas that El Buen Samaritano is able to continue providing access to quality education programs to an average of 550 adults and 150 children per semester.
Additionally, the Education Department has implemented new programs for children from ages 6 through 18. In the spring, Outdoor Kids gave dozens of children, coming from a primarily urban setting, an opportunity to become familiar with the natural world while preparing them for El Ranchito, a week-long overnight nature immersion summer camp. During the summer, El Buen’s Summer Camp offered an academic-based curriculum consisting of math, literacy, science and the arts. And finally, El Ranchito Nature Camp helped dozens of urban children reconnect with nature. It provided a nature-immersion experience designed to nurture the minds, bodies and spirits of campers in ways that were completely new for many of them.
The Episcopal Foundation of Texas’ continued support blesses the lives of hundreds of families at El Buen Samaritano Episcopal Mission year after year. We are honored to have The Episcopal Foundation of Texas as a partner.
