With only a few weeks left before school starts, few would imagine that children would be emerged in books and educational activities. A place to instill in its children a love for learning, while stressing the importance of lifelong learning, El Buen’s Summer Camp is designed to bridge the gap between the spring and fall semester for children ages six to 12.

Teaching Urban Children the Beauty of Nature

Imagine birds welcoming the morning. Imagine cicadas singing through the night. Nature. When immersed in it, something about it moves us to enjoy profound breaths, which, unbeknownst to us, reconnect us to the beautiful world around us. This summer, Austin urban children had this experience at El Ranchito.

Volunteer Spotlight
NCL Austin Chapter

When it comes to volunteering, the National Charity League Austin Chapter truly knows how to get things done. Always willing and determined to finish a task and finish it well, the mothers and daughters of NCL Austin Chapter know exactly what it’s like to volunteer with efficiency and a great attitude.

While their volunteering specialty at El Buen Samaritano has included assembling food baskets for the Hands for Hope Annual Thanksgiving Basket Event for several years now, the mothers and daughters of the National Charity League Austin Chapter have taken on a commendable new task this summer. From unloading carts full of food and stocking the shelves of the food pantry, to assembling grocery bags for food pantry recipient families, this blissful group of volunteers ensure food pantry clients leave the premises of El Buen Samaritano with smiles on their faces. “They’re always very friendly, organized and ready to get to the next task once they finish,” said Rosa Carroll, food pantry coordinator. “They’re great with our clients,” Rosa said. “They let them know they care by engaging with them in conversation as they help them carry their groceries to the parking lot.”

With a mission to foster mother-daughter relationships while committing to community service, leadership development and cultural experiences, the National Charity League Austin Chapter greatly contributes towards reaching a common goal with El Buen Samaritano: to strengthen Austin families. Thank you, ladies!

Community Partner Spotlight Applied Materials Foundation

A loyal partner of El Buen Samaritano Episcopal Mission since 2004, the Applied Materials Foundation has supported the Emergency Food Assistance program of El Buen for quite some time now.

Year after year, the Applied Materials Foundation makes it possible for eligible families to receive staples such as milk, bread, rice and a variety of canned, frozen and fresh produce and fruits, keeping families in need and their homes stable so they don’t have to choose between groceries and health care or rent.

The food pantry is designed to fill gaps for clients, to help them alleviate intermittent food instability and hunger—not to serve as a continuous or sole source of food support. This approach meets the agency’s mission by allowing clients to participate in their own betterment. The food pantry permits only weekly access so that clients use its services as a supplemental source of food.

Committed to making a positive social contribution in regions where Applied Materials employees work and live through philanthropic investments in the areas of education, civic development, arts and culture, and the environment, the Applied Materials Foundation has greatly impacted the lives of many through its partnership with El Buen Samaritano. El Buen Samaritano is grateful to be able to put food on the tables of those in need through the faithful generosity of the Applied Materials Foundation. Thank you!
