Student Graduates Kick-off their Educational Journey
“Reach for the stars!”
That is the message twenty-four of El Buen’s youngest learners received at the Child Learning Center’s 2010 Prekindergarten Graduation Ceremony on Thursday, April 22. The students, who came to the end of their preliteracy curriculum at the Child Learning Center, were taught early-childhood learning objectives and mastery skills designed to empower them to successfully enter the public school system.

Healthy Beginnings, Healthy Community

“You look so big!”, “You look so small for five months!”, “You’re exercising too much and hurting your baby.”
If you’re a mother, you probably remember receiving comments similar to these and a plethora of advice from friends, family and even strangers during your pregnancy. Such was the case for Antonia Alberto (photo left), a former participant of El Buen Samaritano’s Comenzando BienŠ (Healthy Beginnings) Prenatal Health Education Program.

Volunteer Spotlight Tamara Kryar

Words cannot express the gratitude of staff and clients toward volunteers like Tamara Cryar (photo above—center), who so passionately give of their time and talents, helping others advance in life.
One of Tamara’s level-one English as a Second Language students said to her when he learned she would no longer teach his class, “Thank you for teaching us English in a clear yet fun way. I wish you could continue teaching us, but I know the children need a good teacher, and you’re the best one.”
After teaching ESL at El Buen for two years, Tamara hopes to become a bilingual teacher for first-grade students next fall—“I have enjoyed my experience at El Buen so much,” Tamara said. “It has changed my life and I am changing mine accordingly.”
El Buen Samaritano is grateful to volunteers who, like Tamara, exemplify the virtues of the Good Samaritan, instilling in clients the confidence they need to face the world every day they leave El Buen Samaritano.

Community Partner Spotlight March of Dimes Texas Chapter
|
|
|
El Buen Samaritano recently received funding from the March of Dimes Texas Chapter, marking 2010 as the 15th year of strong collaborative ties between the two nonprofits.
The grant for $14,000 will allow El Buen Samaritano to reach approximately 120 pregnant women in Travis and Williamson County between 2009 and 2010 through the March of Dimes’ Comenzando BienŠ (Healthy Beginnings) Prenatal Health Education Program.
A culturally and linguistically appropriate, prenatal health education curriculum, Comenzando BienŠ provides Hispanic women and their families with information about healthy pregnancy during eight sessions, creating a supportive environment that promotes healthy behaviors, and empowering participants to become assertive, informed consumers of prenatal care services.
El Buen Samaritano is grateful to be able to impact the health of Central Texas women and their babies through the faithful generosity of the March of Dimes Texas Chapter.
