Imagine opening up the Bible and explaining to a room full of 13-15 year old boys what this book is all about. Imagine taking that conversation a step further and teaching those same young men how to read the Bible and understand it. Imagine answering their questions. Questions about the meanings of words and phrases. Questions like, "How can God actually know, do and be all He says in this book?" Well, with God's help and the financial support of a faithful small group of Christians, that's what I get to do. Last week I had the opportunity to see a new dream come true in ministry. I have had a great desire to see what might happen if we could introduce a special edition of our one year spiritual journal to the youth in the inner city I minister to. Because of a donation we received, I brought in a special edition journal for these youth. In this Bible study we discussed the "most important relationships" in our life.
The youth were taught the concept of Bible reading and keeping a spiritual journal. I had them do one day of devotions (a first for most if not all of them). Then they were taught how to start a prayer list and we introduced the concept of memorizing scripture.
Several of the guys began writing in their journals about the passage we read together and they started their first attempt at making a prayer list.
Are you wondering how I felt about the potential of these guys connecting with the "spiritual journal" idea? Well... I was amazed by the enthusiasm of many of them. A couple of guys just kept writing and writing. One guy had two pages of prayer requests in just a few minutes.
This week in our Bible study I'll be following up with them to see how their first week of reading the Bible has affected their life. I think it might have made a difference. Don't you?
