Fruit That Remains
The phone rang a couple weeks ago on a Sunday afternoon.
"Hey Ken, how you doin'?" I knew exactly who it was. *Terry and I really
connected several months ago. He was detained at the Indianapolis detention
center for months and is now in another facility. He will be released soon to
go home. I go each week to visit him during a "family session" at the facility
he is in now. All the teens in the family session are joined by their parents
and siblings. I am there to be with him as his "family." When he called, he was
checking to make sure I was coming on the following Tuesday. He said, "Ken, I
really hope you can come this week. It encourages me so much to see you." I
hung up the phone and kept thinking about that comment, "it encourages me so
much to see you."
During my "family session" visit, *Terry leaned forward to
whisper as an instructor was talking. He said, "Ken, will you promise... Read the rest of the story.
*I use alternate names for the youth I write about in order to protect their privacy.
Man Up Bible Study
My regular Bible study called "Man Up" focuses on topics
that relate to developing in to the man God intended us to be. This month the
guys have been especially responsive to the study. In a meeting last week 100%
of the guys indicated they do not have a father at home. Read the rest of the story.
Darrin Gray / All Pro Dads
I had the privilege of spending an evening with Darrin Gray
of All Pro Dads.Former Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy serves with All Pro
Dads and Darrin came to spend an evening in my "Man Up" Bible study. We had a
great time together and Darrin and I are praying and talking about some unique
partnerships we would like to develop with each other's ministry. Read the rest of the story.
Ghana Youth Project
Thanks to generous donations we were able to ship our High
Impact Teen Devotional journals to a youth ministry in Ghana West Africa. The
next step is to publish a tract written by one of the African teens that won a
tract-writing contest connected with a special youth conference in Ghana.
Fredrick Kearney is the missionary serving in Ghana and I have really enjoyed
helping him as a partner in this project. Our connection began with a phone
call from Fredrick telling me that "somehow one of the High Impact Teen
Journals ended up on his desk in Ghana, West Africa."
Mayor's Office
A couple weeks ago I had a unique opportunity to meet with
Douglas Hairston in the Indianapolis Mayor's office. Douglas Hairston is the
Director of the Front Porch Alliance, working with faith-based organizations
throughout Indianapolis. He was a real encouragement to me in my ministry work
in the inner city and gave me some great counsel in future development of my
ministry vision for the needs here in Indianapolis.
85% Support
As
many of you know, my ministry has continued over the past three months with a
loss of 85% of my regular support. A large part of my support comes from
businessmen who have experienced a shortfall due to the current economy. If I
were to try to write the booklet, "How To Live on 85% Less", I don't know how I
would begin to explain it. The truth is, I have no idea how to explain it but I
am so appreciative of the people who have supported us through this extremely
trying time. God is truly giving us peace and confidence that He is in control.
Pray for our supporters that their situation will be resolved and our full
support will resume soon.
In Christ,
Ken Turner
