Doing What You Were Born To Do
May 2008
Ken Greetings!

A long time ago I made a decision to be a "long term" kind of guy. As you know my life has been spent living in the world of teenagers. One of the perils of youth ministry is short term service. If a person is going to impact teenagers he must be in it for the long haul.

Sometimes God allows steps to take place in our life that catch us by surprise. I just spent three months (my shortest term of employment ever) involved in a camp ministry in Tennessee and loved the ministry each day. My work at the camp is now done and I asked myself this one question... "Is it possible to wake up each day and be doing what you feel you were born to do?" I think it is. I began to pray, seek godly advice and think about what I was "born to do."

There is no doubt in my mind that my work to reach teenagers for Christ is yet to be finished. As a matter of fact, it might just be beginning.

The Lord has opened a door for me to plug in to a front line ministry with teenagers. I have established Ken Turner Ministries as a way to reach in to youth organizations such as detention centers, youth inner city missions and even partner with chaplains of hospitals to minister to youth.

There are times in our life when we are extremely open to God. When we are ill and when we are in great trouble. I anticipate the privilege of seeing hundreds of teenagers saved during the next year.

BibleInStories Please Don't Release Me From Here
While attending a meeting this past Monday night at the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center, I got a clearer picture of the true ministry opportunities there.

Tonya Hill, director of volunteer programs shared in a meeting on Monday night this story. She said a young teenage boy came to her recently and said, "Mrs. Hill, I wish someone would come and teach me how to be a man. I have no idea what a real man is supposed to be like. And by the way, please don't release me from here any time soon because I have no life at home. Here, I have a warm bed and meals each day and I am protected."

"We need some spiritual leaders in the community to come in here and help us by providing the message of salvation and following up with these troubled youth, teaching them how to go out and live life.", said Mrs. Hill.

Since over 12,000 teens have used our High Impact Teens spiritual journal, I see it as a great starting point to make a special edition available to the teens in the detention centers, hospitals and inner city missions. The plan is to incorporate teaching material in the journal on basic truths like, "What God says about being a man."

I've Never Lived In A Place With Hot Water
An interesting story told on Monday night at my orientation meeting at the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center was of a teenage girl who takes very quick showers. The staff member questioned how she good get clean after such a short time in the shower. The teenager replied, "I have always taken quick showers because I have never lived in a place with hot water." Not only is there a need for the gospel but there are also needs for ladies to come in and teach personal hygiene and tips on how to become the lady God wants you to be. My wife hopes to partner with me in teaching troubled teen girls.

Let's Get Beyond, "How Do You Feel Today?"
The chaplain at Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis told me sometimes it would be so helpful to have a ministry resource chaplains could use with teens in the hospital. It would be nice to get beyond asking, "So, how do you feel today?" and spend time with a teenager talking about what God is teaching in the word. I am working with the Riley Childrens Hospital on a plan to provide a journal of Hope and Healing.

A Little Help
To be honest, I see the potential of this ministry as being pretty much unlimited. In two weeks there has been a great response in commitments for monthly support. The financial support that has been committed so far will begin in late June. Until then, there will be great limitations on my progress without some help financially.

If you feel God leading you to have a part in the start up phase of this ministry, feel free to contact me.
