The right lighting can work wonders

Written by Jenna Simpson owner of About Image Photography

The right lighting fixtures can work wonders in your home. Light can change a room from boring to a stunning showpiece. It's important to understand the fundamentals of lighting when selecting light fixtures for your home.

It's suggested that a well-designed lighting scheme will give you a competitive advantage when selling your home, as home buyers respond positively to homes that are well lit. Every average sized room should have a minimum of three light sources. One common tip among designers is to think of a giant triangle, and to place a lamp at every point of the triangle. This balances the light in the room.

In small spaces, light helps to expand a room.  There are many advantages to using lighting to help make a room look larger. Under-cabinet lighting in the kitchen can give the illusion of more counter space. Windows and large framed mirrors reflect light, helping a room feel more spacious. Tall lamps cast interesting shadows, drawing the eye upward and making a room appear larger. And don't forget the glow of a candle - candles are a great way to create accent lighting.

A daily dose of sunshine has been proven to have positive effects on an individual's overall sense of well-being. Natural lighting reduces eye strain, lifts spirits, and encourages natural harmony. Higher levels of light generally produce cheerful effects and stimulate people to be more alert and active. Lower levels of light create a more relaxed atmosphere of intimacy and restfulness.

Proper lighting design can make all the difference in how your home looks and feels, which in turn can effect how you feel. Lighting designers must keep in mind how behaviour is effected by lighting. Some interesting examples include:
- People tend to follow the brightest path
- Brightness can focus attention
- Lighting can affect body position
- Facing wall luminance is preferred
- Well-lit environments encourage productivity

Many designers and consumers are looking for ways to save on costs while promoting more energy-saving practices. Good lighting design can be both beautiful and efficient. This could turn into long-term savings of both money and energy. Day lighting techniques can reduce lighting bills by as much as 75%. Artificial lighting produces more heat and can require more air conditioning to offset the heat generated in the warmer months.
