RGS Goes Bananas for Jane Goodall

RGS students were honored on Friday by a visit from Dr. Jane Goodall. With the Early Childhood students as her audience, Dr. Goodall shared stories from her childhood and explained why conservation of the environment is so important. With students in kindergarten through sixth grade, Dr. Goodall spoke about her work with chimpanzees and promoted her worldwide student conservation group, "Roots and Shoots." We are especially grateful to the Andrew and Sydney Davis Foundation for sponsoring Dr. Goodall's visit. CLICK HERE to read the article in The Albuquerque Journal-Santa Fe.

RGS Swim Team Brings Home Coveted Sportsmanship Award
On Sunday, April 18, RGS joined other area schools to take part in the annual Santa Fe elementary school swim meet. Although normally considered a small school, with over 50 swimmers RGS fell into the large school category for the sheer number of participants. Swimmers as young as Grandes and as old as Sixth Grade swam against schools including Pinon, Eldorado and Wood Gormley. RGS students took home many ribbons for their achievements, and the school was also honored with the meet-wide Sportsmanship Award for the first time. Pictured at left are Lucas Schlenzig (gr. 4), Jackson Wetherill (gr. 2), Toby Innes (gr. 4), and Cody Babcock (gr. 2) with just some of the first place ribbons won during the morning. Special thanks are due to coaches Stu Pendleton and Anne Tidmore for the hard work and time they put into the swim team this year, as well as all the parent volunteers who pitched in at the meet. Congratulations to all who participated! |

Spring Musical to be Presented on GrandeFriends Day
Rio Grande School will be presenting the original musical entitled "The R Word" as the GrandeFriends Day Concert this year on Friday, May 21. This production will be a collaboration between the drama, music and art classes and may be the first ever musical presented by the entire student body. The story follows the Robinson family as they recover their long lost RGS kids. We spend a year with them as they learn how to function in society after spending 5 years on a deserted island. The sixth grade class will be the "stars" of the show and we look forward to learning all that they have to tell us about "civilized" living!
GrandeFriends Day invitations have been sent to grandparents, and we are hoping for a strong turnout. This year, we are also proud to welcome renowned performer and RGS grandparent Jacques D'Amboise as our honorary MC! Parents, please plan to join us for the show, which will take place at 11:oo am. Shortly before and immediately after the show, please also join us in the courtyard for the Annual Student Art Exhibit. Dismissal will occur immediately after the show, and there will be no extended care on that day. |

Varsity Basketball Takes on Faculty and Parents

In celebration of their successful season, the Varsity basketball team gathered once more to challenge their parents and members of the RGS faculty to a grudge match on Friday afternoon, April 23. With Physical Education Specialist Sara McIntyre officiating, the game was neck and neck through all four quarters, but the students edged out a win after four regulation quarters. Overtime foul shots gave the faculty a chance to redeem themselves. The game was a blast for everyone including the spectators, and was a perfect cap to an exciting season. Special thanks to varsity coach Terry Mulert for organizing.
Participants in Friday's game were:
Students: Tate Birk (5), Patrick Boyd (5), Luc Simard-Halm (5), Sam Brill (6), Francis Castillo-Mulert (6), Tyler Innes (6), Elvis Parker-Jones (6), Alanie Rael (6), and Adam Weyhrauch (6)
Parents & Faculty: Jennifer Jackson, Ahlum Scarola, Jay Underwood, Neal Turnquist, Peter Brill, Richard Parker, Terry Mulert, Jim Weyhrauch, Cate D'Amboise, Brian Birk, and Sara McIntyre.
Jennifer "Action" Jackson is triple-teamed by Sam Brill, Ally Rael, and Francis Castillo-Mulert, as Tyler Innes closes in and Jim "Say No More" Weyrauch looks for the pass.

RGS Stars! Congratulations to third grader Arielle Nathan, who recently won first place in the third grade division of the Santa Fe Water Conservation Contest! The poster contest was open to 1st-6th graders in the city of Santa Fe. This year's poster theme was Our Water, Our Future. Arielle and this year's other winners will be honored on May 12 at 5pm in City Hall prior to the City Council meeting. Congratulations, Arielle, we look forward to seeing your poster on display in Santa Fe!
After her recent travels brought her to post-earthquake Haiti, RGS parent Cosima Lux (Mimi Bryant, 2) returned to Santa Fe to continue work with her non-profit organization One Week's Wisdom. Cosima's work as both a certified nurse midwife, as well as a talented photographer, led her to Haiti after the devestating earthquake to lend her services. The mission of One Week's Wisdom is to bring volunteeers to Haiti to involve them with the women and children of Haiti through week-long health, art, and athletic workshops. |

Bicycle Safety to Take Place in P.E. Classes
The Bicycle Safety Program for first through fourth grades will start Tuesday, May 4th and run until Friday, May 14th. Students will participate in bicycle safety on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays during their P.E. class. If students bring their own bicycles, they may lock them up near the Tether Ball Pole on the side of the MAC. Please don't forget your helmets! If a child does not have a bicycle or helmet, Ms. McIntyre will supply extras. Also, if the weather is poor, there will be no bicycle safety that day so students should not bring their bicycles. To read more about Mrs. McIntyre's work with our children on bicycle and pedestrian safety, CLICK HERE.
