Seeking Balance in PE

Physical Education Teacher Sara McIntyre helps Pequeno Greta Swanson learn how to balance on one foot using a "Bosu" (short for "Both Sides Up"). Sara says, "Working on balance with the little ones is important for developing their core strength, coordination, and helping them feel comfortable in their bodies."
Reminder: School is OPEN for Students on Friday

To make up for snow cancellations, this Friday's Parent-Teacher Conference Day will also be a regular school day for all students. Please note the following items:
  • There will be NO HOT LUNCH offered, so please pack your child a lunch for the day.
  • There will be NO EXTENDED CARE, except for those students whose parents are in conferences between 2:00 and 4:30 pm.
Lead teachers will be in private office and conference spaces around the campus to meet with parents; a list of their locations will be posted at the main entrance on Friday morning.

Please note that our second make-up day will occur on Friday, May 7.

We are particularly grateful to all of our teachers for being flexible in making this day work for all of us!
MathCounts Team to Join State Competition

Rio Grande School's first MathCounts team competed in Pojoaque on Saturday, February 20th against other sixth, seventh, and eighth graders in the regional competition.

Sixth graders Laura Garrett, Gavyn Pendleton, Carly Bonwell, and Grace Calavan participated in both the individual and team portions of the competition. They are all members of the after school math club, which meets the first and third Wednesday of every month with Mr. Pendleton and Ms. Parsons. They came up against some difficult concepts including calculating probabilities, finding the interior angles of various shapes and much more. They worked incredibly hard, practiced many hours and are already excited about competing again next year.

Laura, Grace, and Gavyn will be competing in the state competition at the end of March in Albuquerque. Be sure to keep your eye on Grace, Carly, Gavyn, and Laura in the coming years. They are all rising mathematical stars!

Congratulations are due to Patrick McCarthy, father of Bailey (Gr. 3), and Molly (Gr. 5) who has just completed a two-year assignment establishing The Nature Conservancy's new Zambezi River Project.  A former Peace Corps volunteer in Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo), Patrick was asked to take time away from his regular duties as conservation director for TNC's New Mexico chapter to start up his new project in southern Africa. For more information on this wonderful accomplishment, please click here.  For more information on the work of The Nature Conservancy, please click here.

Castillo Installation
Congratulations are also due fo
r Paula Castillo, mother of Francis (Gr. 6) who is completing a large-scale and long term art installation in honor of Cesar Chavez.  Pictured below are some of the pieces after they've been put into place at the installation's location at Broadway and Chavez in Albuquerque.  What a beautiful and fitting tribute to a man who continues to mean so much to the community.

Second Grade Teacher, parent, and artist Kirstin Mitchell is showing her beautiful work at Scripps Fine Art on Canyon Road, with a Grand Opening celebration on Friday, March 26 from 5 to 8 pm. Come see her fine work and enjoy live music and hors d'oeuvres!

Heads for the Day

Grace Calavan

Jack Pagano
Sixth grader Grace Calavan (top) and fourth grader Jack Pagano each had the opportunity to act as "Head of School for a Day," as their parents were the winning bidders on the auction item offered by Mr. Underwood. Among other CEO-type activities, Grace and Jack greeted students in the morning (while sporting their RGS fleece vests and holding the requisite hot beverage), led All School Meeting, and visited classrooms.
