Rio Grande School
November 20, 2009
Greetings!

I write with an update about the upcoming search for our next Head of School. The first step in our search has been to put together a Search Committee that will guide the process. In consultation with the Board, I appointed the parent-trustee and administrative representatives, and the faculty elected its own representatives at a meeting yesterday. The members of the Head Search Committee are:

Joanne Aversa, Early Childhood Grandes Teacher
Andrew Davis, Parent, Trustee, former Board President, and Finance Committee Chair
Maureen Devlin, Associate Head of School
Will Halm, Parent, Board Vice President and Development Committee Chair
Mary Amelia Howell, Parent, Trustee and former Board President
Fred Nathan, Parent, Board President
Kristin Potter, Fourth Grade Teacher
Ahlum Scarola, Fifth and Sixth Grade Teacher
Leah Swanson, Parent, Trustee and Parent Association President
Debbie Vigil, Parent, Trustee and Community Outreach Committee Chair

I will serve as Chairman of the Search Committee and I am delighted that Will Halm, who will succeed me next year as President of the Board, will be the Vice Chairman of the Committee. I am also pleased that we have been able to recruit three school heads who are knowledgeable about this process to advise our committee: Lisa Darling, RGS trustee and President of United World College; Jim Leonard, RGS parent and Head of Santa Fe Preparatory School; and, Jay Underwood, our current Head.

The Head Search Committee is charged with developing a vision for the next Head's desired qualities and qualifications, identifying and interviewing the strongest candidates, and presenting a short list of finalists to the Board of Trustees, who will make the final selection. The process will draw input from the broader RGS community and will be informed by our revised mission statement and strategic plan. Our first meeting will be December 2nd when we will interview two of the leading national search firms.

The Board has asked us to begin the search with the objective that we will have a new Head in place by July 1, 2010. If at some point it appears that this will not be possible without compromising our standards, then the Board will hire an interim Head for the 2010-2011 school year. The search would then resume for the 2011-2012 school year.
The next report will be about the selection of the national search firm and how we intend to solicit your input and keep you informed about the search. Until then, have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,
 Fred Nathan
