A Kindergarten House Call

The Kindergarten class welcomed a very special guest on Friday morning. Sophia Gossum's father, Dr. Sann Gossum, shared many tools of his specialty, Orthopedic Surgery, with Sophia and her classmates. In addition to bringing in X-rays of fractured bones and actual metal plates used to repair injuries, Dr. Gossum made a cast for Sophia's arm and removed it with a cast cutter. Above you can see Dr. Gossum removing the cast.

Hawks Basketball Season Set to Begin
Sara McIntyre, Physical Education Specialist
With snow and colder air moving in, basketball season has also arrived. The RGS Hawks will begin their initial practices and tryouts this week!
All boys and girls in 3rd through 6th grade are invited to play on the teams. Practices will take place two days per week in December. Games will begin the second week of January and continue for approximately seven weeks. Games usually fall on one week day and on Saturday mornings.
Tryouts for the 5th and 6th graders will be on Tuesday, November 17th and Thursday, November 19th from 3:15-4:30 pm in the MAC. If your child is interested in joining the team, he or she must attend practice on at least one of these dates. Parents Terry Mulert and Brian Boyd will be coaching this squad.
Tryouts for the 3rd and 4th graders will be on Monday, November 30th and Wednesday, December 2nd from 3:15-4:30pm in the MAC. The same rules apply to joining the 3rd and 4th grade team as above--attendance in at least one of these practices is mandatory for participation in the rest of the season. Parents Matt Calavan and Owen Perillo will be sharing the coaching duties, but would love help from anyone else interested. If you'd like to offer your time to the 3rd and 4th grade team, please contact Sara McIntyre.
Looking forward to seeing you at practice! GO HAWKS! |

RGS Jumps, Jogs, Dances and Hula Hoops For Good Cause
Gilbert Hall was a sight to see on Friday, as all classes gathered for a fundraiser for the Hardt Haven Children's Orphanage in Ghana. Sponsored by the fifth grade class, there were plenty of activities to raise money. Although everyone made their way around the field, running and walking weren't the only ways people enjoyed the fundraiser. Jumping rope and hula hooping were also popular ways to exercise and enjoy the time as a community. News on the total amount raised for the orphanage will be reported when all funds have been tallied. Below are some snapshots of the fun. Thanks to the fifth grade class, teachers, and all involved in organizing this event!

Our Annual Fund supports teacher salaries and benefits, tuition assistance, and helps to buy special items for the classroom. We couldn't do it without you! Click on the link above to give now using our secure server, or email Sue Gaddis with your pledge to give by May 31, 2010.

Gaze at the Stars Tomorrow Night
Come join the RGS community for an evening of meteor watching and stargazing Tuesday night from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm starting in the MAC. Listen to ancient stories about the constellations, drink hot chocolate, and watch meteors streak the sky (there is supposed to be a meteor shower tomorrow night!). Bring a blanket to spread out on the field and lots of warm clothes. If you own binoculars, these might be helpful to view some of our closer neighbors, including Jupiter. Students, parents, and friends of all age are welcome! |

RGS Stars
Head to your nearest newsstand to pick up the December issue of Town & Country magazine, featuring an article on Santa Fe, and RGS's very own Dale family. Lili (grade 4) and Lucien (grade 2) are pictured here on the lead page of the article. Make sure you get your copy while you can! Congratulations to the entire Dale family for this recognition!
Parent Leah Swanson recently completed the New York City Marathon. In addition to running the marathon, Leah raised an amazing $5,000 for lung cancer research. She also notes "I'm happy to report that I finished the race in 4 hours and 40 minutes - no speed record, but it was a great personal accomplishment and an amazing experience overall. It was that much more significant to have the support of family and friends. I feel truly blessed. Thank you!' A great personal accomplishment, indeed. Well done Leah, and congratulations!
Several RGS students are starring in Pandemonium Productions's current musical "Beauty and the Beast," produced and directed by drama specialist Chris Leslie. Sixth grader Anna Bennett, pictured here on the left, stars as Belle. Other RGS cast members include sixth grader Bianca Gonzales, fourth graders Roxy Roffer, Paige Underwood, and Sara Underwood, second grader Courtney Brookover, and 2009 alumna Katie Broyles. Our students will see the production this week during school, but tickets are still available for next weekend's matinees. CLICK HERE for more information. Be an RGS Star! We take pride in the accomplishments of our students, parents, grandparents, staff, and alumni. Please email your star's information to NewsGrande editor Kate Remsberg. |

If you have any other items to donate to the greenhouse including soil, shelves, pots, etc., please drop them off in 6th grade. Questions about an item you'd like to donate? Please contact Stuart Pendleton.
