Ghosts and Hippies Reign at the RGS Halloween Parade
If you weren't able to join us for the Halloween Parade, you missed a very cute, creative, and creepy community haunting and dancing its way through the MAC last Friday afternoon. While members of the administration and staff almost too authentically brought us back several decades to the 60's, students in kindergarten through sixth grade wowed their fellow students and onlooking parents with their costumes. Insects, ghosts, princesses, Harry Potter characters, and even Michael Jackson & Chewbacca made an appearance at the party. Can you recognize those costumed in the pictures below?
Special thanks to Associate Head of School Maureen Devlin for organizing and motivating the inaugural RGS Halloween Parade and celebration!

Jump/Jog-a-thon To Raise Money for African Orphanage
The fifth grade class is sponsoring a jog-a-thon/jump-a-thon on Friday morning, November 13th. Inspired by a trip taken last summer by Pequenos teacher Cate D'Amboise and her son and sixth grader Sam Brill, the class has chosen to donate their proceeds to the Hardt Haven Children's Home, an orphanage for AIDS victims in Kpando, Ghana. The money raised will go directly to serving the children who live in extreme poverty.
All classes will participate in the fundraiser, either by jumping rope or running around the field a set number of times. Friends and family who are interested in participating can pledge an amount based on their child's participation. Students can either gather pledges and collect money after jumping or running, or they may gather money prior to the event and hand it in before they begin. More information will be distributed as the the jump/jog-a-thon gets closer, but questions can be directed to Jennifer Jackson.
Sam Brill has written a piece remembering a special day in the course of his volunteer work at the Hardt Haven Children's Home. Below is an excerpt of that piece.
Christopher is a three-year-old boy in Africa. He's always smiling. The only time he is sad is when he sees other people eating and he's not. The children's home found him completely malnourished, but after that he loved to eat.

Listen to ancient stories told about the constellations, drink hot chocolate, and watch meteors streak the sky. Bring a blanket to spread out on the field and lots of warm clothes. If you own binoculars, these might be helpful to view some of our closer neighbors, including Jupiter. Questions? Please contact Science Specialist Mollie Parsons.

RGS Marketing Materials Go Green
When administrators Barbara Bentree and Rich Virgin sat down to purchase this year's RGS marketing materials, they saw that there were biodegradable options for pens, pencils, highlighters, and grocery bags. These items didn't cost more than the traditional versions and work just as well. Barbara and Rich hope that these items will inspire all of our families to seek out alternatives when purchasing commercial items for everyday use. |
