Finding Their Own Way

 Stu & Third Graders

Experiential Education Coordinator Stuart Pendleton teaches third graders (from left) Maya Crosby, Blake Trevisani, Kyle Dow, Taylor Lincoln, and Ochiro Ochiai how to navigate using a compass. Orienteering is one of the many outdoor activities that Mr. Pendleton is teaching students this year in our Experiential Education Program.
Come "Back to School" Thursday Night

Back-to-School Night, a schoolwide event at which parents will experience RGS from their child's perspective,  is this Thursday, September 24 beginning at 6 pm. The evening is organized into three sessions. The first general session, for all parents, will be in Gilbert Hall at 6 pm. The two sessions that follow will have identical agendas so that parents of multiple children at RGS may attend more than one class session. Parents who have only one student enrolled at RGS may leave after the first session has ended.

                Gilbert Hall (MAC)                6:00 pm.
                Session 1 (classroom)          6:30 pm
                Session 2 (classroom)         7:15 pm

We will be offering complimentary childcare for all RGS students in the form of Movie Night. Childcare begins at 5:45 and will last until the classroom presentations finish (please do not send snacks with the children).  No reservation is necessary--simply drop your child off at these three locations depending on their age:

               Pequenos-Kindergarten      Media Center
First and Second Grade       Music/Drama Room
               Third - Sixth Grade                Playground/MAC

Please note:  If your child is in Extended Care, you will need to pick him/her up before 5:30 and supervise him/her until the evening childcare begins.  If possible, we encourage you to pick up your child early on Thuirsday, as this makes for a long day at school otherwise.
Students Build Tech Skills, Teachers Build Web Sites
by Tom Goodwin, Director of Technology

Technology is off to a great start this year, and the RGS specialists are leading the way. The specialists met last week to learn how to use the school's FirstClass Unified Communications package to publish web pages about their individual programs. You will soon see links on NewsGrande to individual web pages designed by each specialist to share Tom Goodwinwhat great activities the students are doing in their classes. Later this year, we hope to publish the classroom teachers' newsletters using this service, so keep an eye out for them soon!

Learn About Middle School Options on October 1

At Seventh Grade Options Night next Thursday, October 1, parents and students will have the opportunity to learn about middle school options in Santa Fe and Albuquerque.  This year, approximately eight schools will send representatives, and information on others will be available.  The representatives will each speak for five minutes about the school's programs and environment; after the presentations, parents and students can visit each school's table to speak personally with the representatives and collect materials.

The evening takes place from 6-8 pm in the MAC and is open to all parents and students, and fifth and sixth grade parents and students are strongly encouraged to attend. The event is free and open to the public, so please invite anyone you know who might benefit from learning about the many options for middle and secondary school in Santa Fe.

Help Prevent Vehicle Break-ins on Campus

Two weeks ago, a car was burglarized while parked on Calle Picacho.
The break-in occurred in broad daylight in a span of just a few minutes, and is the third such theft of its kind in two years on or adjacent to our campus. Please help us prevent these crimes by parking your car as close to the main building as you can and removing all valuables from plain sight. We are currenty discussing further preventive security measures to keep our lots safe.

PA Activities Underway

More than thirty parents and staff gathered for the first Parent Association meeting last Wednesday. PA President Leah Swanson introduced the group to the various upcoming volunteer opportunities, and parents provided input about school events and communications systems.
