| An Anniversary to Remember |
Greetings!
The last academic year marked an important milestone for Rio Grande School as we celebrated 30 years of challenging, inspiring, and nurturing Santa Fe's children. We also celebrated some significant accomplishments in our program, fundraising initiatives, and community outreach efforts. We...
- added a science specialist;
- appointed a coordinator of experiential education;
- instituted the Responsive Classroom approach to social and emotional learning;
- welcomed the most ethnically and socioeconomically diverse student body in recent history;
- continued to collect pledges on our "Building a Grande Future" capital campaign, bringing our endowment to over $1.6 million.

This year, the momentum for refining our school continues. We have placed associate teachers in every classroom and are instituting schoolwide practices in literacy instruction. Thanks to the vision of trustees, staff, and parents, we are almost ready to publish a new strategic plan to drive Rio Grande School forward for the next three years.
This annual report is intended to be a basic guide for you about how RGS uses its financial resources. One item of particular note: you will see that our tuition income (81.6%) just barely covers the cost of our salaries and benefits (81.1%). That means that every other expense at RGS, from classroom supplies to building maintenance, is covered largely by Annual Fund and Gala Grande proceeds. This is a very powerful example of how we need your support to do what we do best!
On behalf of the entire RGS community, thank you for your ongoing strong support of our school. |
|
Sincerely,
 Jay Underwood Head of School |

Last Year's Annual Fund Breaks Records
 The 2008-2009 Annual Fund was the largest in Rio Grande School's history, raising $217,439 with 88% of parents and 100% of trustees and employees making donations.
The annual fund covers about 8% of the school's annual budget and helps pay for expenses such as faculty salaries and benefits, classroom supplies, and new technology.
We give thanks to our 2008-2009 Development Committee for their hard work in bringing the Annual Fund to its most successful conclusion ever: Richard Altermann, Matt Calavan, Will Halm (Chair), Siri Atma Khalsa, Shinji Ochiai, Christopher Stoy, Sloan Swanson, Krista Tyra, and Tom Wolinski.
And a very special thanks goes to Sydney and Andrew Davis for hosting the gratitude party for lead donors at their beautiful home on January 30, 2009. |

Endowment Grows to Over $1.6 Million
 In early 2008, RGS wrapped up its "Building a Grande Future" Capital Campaign, exceeding its $4 million goal to build new performing arts and first grade classrooms, administrative offices, and to grow the school's endowment. Many donors made five-year pledges to the campaign, enabling them to spread their gifts over time.
With the building projects paid for in 2007, all money received thereafter went directly to our general endowment, which serves as an important safety net and helps to sustain the school's future financial health. By the end of the "Building a Grande Future" pledge period in 2011, total gifts to the endowment will equal approximately $2.5 million.
Our short-term goal is to raise the endowment to equal approximately one year's operating budget, which is about $2.8 million. At that point, we hope to begin drawing a small percentage of the endowment's annual earnings to help cover operating expenses. CLICK HERE to see a list of donors to the endowment in 2008-2009 | |
