Woodlawn's Garden
Program Growing

The Woodlawn Garden Program, under the direction of garden coordinator Jennifer Crain, is growing.  New garden volunteers are helping Jennifer rehabilitate the formal garden, located behind the house, and the cutting garden located adjacent to the parking lot.  Kids Peace volunteers are working with Jennifer to transform an underused raised bed into a useful place to grow flowers and herbs for Woodlawn's afternoon teas.  Jennifer is also using the gardens as a classroom, having taught a garden mapping class in May.  Saturday mornings, from 9 am to noon, the public is invited to learning gardening tips from Jennifer while volunteering to help keep the gardens looking beautiful.

Front door and entrance hallway restored

A talented team has restored Woodlawn's front door and entrance hallway.  Preservation Carpenter Nelson Emerton carefully dissembled the front door and restored it piece by piece.  He also repaired the frame and decorative molding which was severely damaged from powder post beetles.  The front hallway was carefully restored by master plasterer Tom St. Germain and painter Eric Rothchild.

Woodlawn Solderholtz Garden Pots

Woodlawn boasts a variety of garden ornaments from carved stone lions to molded cement fruit and flower baskets on pedestals to elegantly simple pots.  One of the most important pieces in the Woodlawn collections is the fine
Circa 1939
Eric Ellis Soderholtz garden urn shown in this 1939 picture.

Soderholtz, a Swedish born photographer, moved to West Gouldsboro in the early 1900s.  There he began making pots for his own use and later commercially.  His pots were used in many estate gardens on Mount Desert Island and are now highly collectible.  Woodlawn's pot is believed to have been made ca. 1920 as it appears in the 1929 estate inventory of George Nixon Black, Jr.  Known for his patronage of fine artists and craftsmen, Nixon Black would have incorporated such picturesque locally made objects into his intimate, and appealing formal garden.  Click here to learn more about Woodlawn's collections.
