New Sunday hours are coming to regional libraries, Main and ImaginOn, after Labor Day.

Sunday hours at our six regional libraries (Beatties Ford Road, Independence, Morrison, North County, South County, and University City) begin September 9, 2012 (after Labor Day). Sunday hours will also resume at Main Library and ImaginOn on that same day. Sunday hours at regional libraries and Main/ImaginOn will be from 1 - 5pm during the school year (Labor Day to Memorial Day).

The new Sunday hours at regionals were made possible by additional FY13 funding from Mecklenburg County.

Friendly reminders:

All libraries will be closed for Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 3.

Our two Uptown libraries, Main and ImaginOn, will be closed Sept. 2 - 8, 2012. Book returns at Main and ImaginOn will be unavailable during the closure, but fines for overdue materials will be waived during this period. The decision to close was made by the Library Board last October due to concerns about safety, access and parking during the Democratic National Convention. We've put together a list of frequently asked questions so customers can plan accordingly.Learn more.

SUMMER READING SUCCESS

A happy Summer Reader

Summer Reading success: 13.8 million minutes of reading!

The 2012 Summer Reading program officially ended Aug. 10,

2012. If you participated, we hope you had fun and will continue reading with us all year long.

This year's Summer Reading participation was incredible:

13.8 MILLION MINUTES READ

This year, 22,167 individuals signed up for the Library's Summer Reading program -- a 26% increase over last year! Participants documented more than 230,318 hours read; that's over 13.8 million minutes of reading!

READING 20 MINUTES A DAY

School-age children, teens and adults who read, did so for an outstanding average of 20 minutes per day!

NEARLY 3,000 YOUNG READERS

The Library also offered a program for pre-readers age 0-4 called "Wee Read", which attracted nearly 3,000 participants. Wee Read encouraged parents to build early reading skills by reading daily to their little ones, an activity that is so beneficial in preparing young children for kindergarten and later academic success.

Along with our partner, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, we believe that reading and literacy in children and teens is a strong predictor of educational attainment and career success. Reading is becoming an even more essential skill for all students, as North Carolina and other states move toward Common Core Standards in which literacy (reading) is embedded in all parts of the curriculum. The more children read, the better their fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.

The Library`s Summer Reading Program is helping to address this critical issue by encouraging reading during the summer months, when academic gains made during each school year can erode significantly if children do not read.

With Summer Reading, the Library is building readers who will be prepared to succeed in school, the workplace, and in life.

READING SUPERSTAR
Cristy reads over 10,000 minutes

Congratulations to Cristy Huynh, who was the grand-prize drawing winner of an iPad 2 for this year's children's Summer Reading program. Cristy read over 10,000 minutes during the summer, which is roughly 166 hours of reading time. She tackled some books in the Harry Potter series as well as other juvenile fiction titles like The Cricket in Times Square and Henry Huggins.

Cristy and her aunts have been coming to the Plaza Midwood Branch for the past three years or so, and we at the Library have had the great pleasure of watching her grow up and thrive. Her family stated, "We really appreciate very much that the library gave Cristy the opportunity to have Summer Reading because it is encouraging Cristy to read more and more books... Cristy is so happy!"
