County Manager recommends $811,000 in additional funding to help Library expand hours at six regional locations in FY13
On Tuesday, May 15, 2012, Mecklenburg County Manager Harry L. Jones, Sr. presented to the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners a recommended budget that includes $811,000 in additional funding that, if adopted, would allow the Library to open the six regional libraries on Sundays during the school year.
This $811,000 will put library service within 10 minutes of most households in Mecklenburg County on Sundays during the school year. Sunday hours are in direct response to community requests and Library Task Force recommendations. The County Commissioners have reviewed Jones' recommended budget, and conducted a straw vote session in which they tentatively approved the funding. Formal budget adoption is in June.
If the funding recommendation is approved by the BOCC in June, Library officials will present new regional operating hours to the Library Board of Trustees at their June meeting, with the goal of launching the new hours on Sunday, September 9, after Labor Day. Hours at Main, ImaginOn, and the smaller community locations would remain at their current levels.
Information on the full FY13 Mecklenburg County budget can be found here.
