New & Noteworthy
| End-Of-Year Ceremony & Eighth Grade Promotion The last day of school, June 12th, was marked by an important passage and noteworthy awards. 71 eighth graders were promoted to high school, each recognized individually and handed a diploma to mark the transition. During the End-Of-Year Awards Ceremony, students were acknowledged for a variety of outstanding achievements. Students from all grades who achieved a GPA of 3.5 or higher were awarded Dean's List certificates, and Mission Awards went to both Middle and Upper School students who strongly demonstrated different aspects of the Pacific Ridge School mission statement. National Merit Scholars and Honor Society students were commended among Upper School students, and a number of rising Seniors received college book awards sponsored by alumni from colleges and universities around the country. Finally, three awards - Harkness, Integration, and Service to School - singled out Seniors who have most embraced the seminar-style approach to learning, effectively integrated topics in their curricular and extra-curricular endeavors, and contributed most positively to the life of the school, respectively. After the ceremonies, the entire community enjoyed a terrific lunch catered by Surf Brother's Teriyaki while they mingled, reminisced about the year just past, and talked about next year. Overhead in the Upper School East Reading Room from one newly-minted 9th-grade student: "This is where we will hang out next year!"
8th graders congratulate their peers.
8th graders celebrate their promotion.
Travel Museums Highlight Year-End TripsAlso on June 12th, the Upper School building was transformed into a travel museum, where groups catalogued their travel experiences in order to share them with the community. This year, students made great efforts to create environmentally-friendly exhibits, maximizing their use of whiteboard space and slide shows and minimizing their use of paper. A number of Marin Headlands, Washington, D.C. and Northern Sierra groups drew timelines on school whiteboards, where they described their main activities, and sprinkled in memorable quotes from students. Some groups used paper ephemera they gathered in the course of their trip. The New York City travelers posted playbills, a map, and photos of their service work alongside a slideshow of photos from the trip. The France group exhibited a map of Versailles, train tickets, and a student's journal with daily cultural observations. Other groups told their stories with artifacts. The Portugal group paired tiles, a soccer jersey, and olive oil with their photo slide show, while the Bahamas group displayed a flag and beautiful photographs of fish, which observers were invited to identify. Finally, China travelers integrated their work in Ancient World History on Ethnography by completing ethnographic studies comparing the U.S. and China. Their thoughtful projects used context (Starbucks in the U.S. vs. an apartment in China, for example), observation (direct surveillance recorded at specific times), and interpretation (analyses of differences and similarities) in order to draw conclusions about both American and Chinese culture. All of the exhibits revealed the rigor, joy, and transformation that the travel programs at Pacific Ridge School bring. Thank you to our students and faculty for taking part, for accepting in equal measure the comfort and the discomfort that travel brings, and for embracing the opportunity to learn more about yourselves, others, and the world.
