West Reading Room Dedicated to Class of 2012

Families of seniors celebrated on Friday, May 18th, when the West Reading Room was formally dedicated to the class of 2012.  Their efforts in the Breaking New Ground Campaign, where they raised over one million dollars, earned them naming rights to the West Reading Room.  Because class of 2012 families also reached 100% participation for Breaking New Ground, a plaque will be installed in the West Reading Room with the name of each class member.  Thank you for your generosity and Firebird spirit, class of 2012!

Class of 2017 Reaches 100% Participation in Annual Fund
Congratulations to the Class of 2017 for reaching 100% participation in the Annual Fund!  Families of 7th graders join Pacific Ridge faculty, staff, trustees, and the Classes of 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016 in this achievement.  We greatly appreciate the support and generosity of our newest Pacific Ridge community members.  A warm thank you goes as well to our parent volunteers - Abby Adams, Stacy Clarke, Larry Cohen, and Minerva Walz - for their leadership and dedication to Pacific Ridge's fundraising efforts.

Pacific Ridge Students, Faculty Watch Eclipse
Dr. Wayne Winters organized an impromptu field trip to Simmons Family Park in San Marcos, on Sunday, May 20th, where he offered #14 welder's glass as well as a sophisticated telescope to those interested in viewing the eclipse.  Thank you, Dr. Winters, for creating this opportunity to see a unique event.  As Dr. Winters pointed out, the next significant solar eclipse visible in North America will not occur until August 21, 2017.

Eclipse viewers watch as the sun overtakes the moon.

Curricular Adventures

Annual Rube Goldberg Competition Tests Ingenuity On Wednesday, May 16th, 8th graders exhibited their Rube Goldberg inventions, complex machines made to complete simple tasks.  Students were asked to explain the physics of each energy transfer necessary to achieve the invention's desired result, and a panel of judges from the community judged the machines.  The winning team, made up of Catherine Ames, Josh Kahn, Erica Chien, and Garret Conway, created a Volcano Machine.  Their invention included a "Gaussian Canon," a magnetic accelerator used to propel a steel marble that then strikes a lever, initiating the baking soda and vinegar reaction that simulates a volcanic eruption.

Boys Varsity Lacrosse Ends Season On High Note
It was an incredible year for the Boys Varsity Lacrosse team, whose 10 Juniors, 5 Sophomores, and 13 Freshmen earned the #4 seed in the playoffs.  The team's very first playoff game was held at home, and while the team lost a close battle it was a strong ending to a remarkable season.  The team finished the year ranked 15th in San Diego, and 38th in the state.  Go Firebirds!

Golf Team Finishes Great Year

The Pacific Ridge Coed Golf team ended the year strongly, with a 13-2 overall record and a 10-0 record in the Pacific League.  The team also qualified for the CIF team competition - a first for the program!  At CIF, the team shot 427, with Marc Hedrick (75) and Isabella Salant (77) leading the way.  Marc's score of 75 tied him for 15th place and qualified him for the second round of the CIF individual competition, where he shot an 81.  Isabella, who tied for 25th out of 226 golfers, was the only girl in Division I or II in the San Diego region who qualified for the boys tournament.  Her play this spring has qualified her to compete in the girls CIF Individual competition in the fall.  Congratulations on a great season to the whole team!
