Here is your chance to recycle those glasses or sunglasses you no longer use.  Junior Samiya Ijaz has partnered with Humanity First and the Lion's Club to run an eyeglass drive for the benefit of Americans and Guatemalans in need.  Bins are located in both the Upper School and Middle School lobbies.  Click here to read more about Ms. Ijaz's project.  Thank you for your support!

The Firebirds Have Landed!
"Whose house?" prompted Athletic Director Darren Lawlor.  "Our house!" responded the crowd, enthusiastically waving  pom poms.  A sea of light blue and black filled the new Athletic Center on Friday, May 4th, when the community celebrated the opening of "our house" - a 35,000 square-foot Athletic Center where Pacific Ridge teams will train and host games.  The multi-purpose venue can also accommodate large meetings, social occasions, and performances, among other events.  Friday's focus, however, was all on the Firebirds, as the Varsity Volleyball, Girls Varsity Basketball, and Boys Varsity Basketball teams took on Pacific Ridge faculty members in the new school gymnasium.  The students squeaked by the faculty, making that first challenge a victory.  But everyone in attendance was a winner.  In the words of Coach Lawlor, "As a team of dedicated student-athletes, coaches, parents, faculty, and staff, we have all worked hard to bring this world-class athletic center to life!"  KUSI captured the ribbon cutting ceremony in two separate broadcasts.  Click here, then click on Saturday, May 5th to see Saturday's segment.  Coverage begins at the 6:50 mark.  Click here to read Dr. Ogle's blog about the big day and about his hopes for athletics at Pacific Ridge School.

Tenth Graders Plant a SEED
On May 2nd, 32 groups of tenth graders presented their Plant a SEED service projects during Community Life period.  Students highlighted the main goals and steps to reach those goals on poster boards, and answered questions from the Pacific Ridge faculty and students.  The projects were local and international, ranging from conservation projects to mental health support to sustainable small business plans.  Students also developed an in-depth portfolio, with a business and communications plan, for each project, that will enable them to continue pursuing the project in their Junior and Senior years, if they choose.

Upper School Theater Students Perform

On Friday, May 4th, Intro Theater Arts students presented an evening of selected scenes.  Drawing from a culturally and historically varied repertoire, they performed scenes from Antigone, The Glass Menagerie, Universal Language, A Raisin in the Sun, and The Misanthrope.  A round of applause to Pacific Ridge thespians!

Tennis Team Swings To The Playoffs
The Boys Varsity Tennis team finished the season 6th out of 32 teams in the Coastal League, making it to the playoffs.  Their victory on Tuesday against Santana High, 12-6, brought them to the quarterfinals, where they lost to the Saints.  Coach Mattingley notes proudly, "We had a great season that was a significant improvement over last year, and we look forward to dominating the Coastal League next year."

Golf Team Poised For Post-Season Play

Congratulations to the Co-Ed Varsity Golf team, which in just its second year as a program has qualified for post-season play in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF).  The team takes on Classical Academy on Monday, and if victorious, will play in the CIF tournament at Escondido Country Club on Tuesday.  Sophomore Marc Hedrick has already qualified for the individual CIF tournament based on his low differential average from this spring season.  Go Firebirds!
