Heritage Food Festival Celebrates Food, Family Culture
Students capped off International Week on Friday, March 30th with a Heritage Food Festival.  For the event, students were invited to share with their Advisory groups traditional recipes that celebrate their cultural backgrounds or family histories.  Each Advisory group selected 1-3 recipes and prepared them together, offering up the recipes along with the delicious eats on the day of the festival.  The recipes were also gathered in an electronic document and shared with the entire community in our first Pacific Ridge School Recipe Collection.  Yum!  Leftover food did not go to waste.  Thank you to Mr. Bray for delivering the extras to La Posada Homeless Shelter in Carlsbad.

One Day Without Shoes at Pacific Ridge School

About 150 Pacific Ridge students, teachers, and staff members participated in One Day Without Shoes on Tuesday, April 10th, joining a worldwide movement to raise awareness of the millions of people throughout the world who live without shoes.  During the course of the day, participants had the opportunity to experience with their bare feet the difficulty of navigating certain terrains and to learn more about the social and medical consequences that can arise from being shoeless.  The event was initiated by 8th-grader Elle Lefebvre, who was inspired to take an active part in One Day Without Shoes after watching the TOMS documentary One for One.  Thank you to everyone who pledged a day without shoes!

Curricular Adventures

Before Spring Break, 9th graders updated the Digital Portfolios they began in Middle School, adding papers, essays, videos, or other pieces they consider their best.  Similar to art portfolios, digital portfolios allow students to showcase and reflect on their most outstanding work, and to track their intellectual progress over time.  The portfolios are organized around the school's mission statement, with a page devoted to each of the mission's three parts: academic excellence, ethical responsibility, and global engagement.  They are created and maintained through Google documents, part of the Google Apps that are used school wide to enhance learning.

Service Learning in the Field

Second to None, an Upper School Service Learning Group that supports Camp Pendleton marines, ran a care package drive in the weeks before Spring Break.  They received over 379 items, including food, bug spray, pens/paper, and footballs, which they shipped to a platoon stationed in Afghanistan.  Thank you to all who generously donated!

Sports on the Ridge

Golf Team Off to a Great Start
The Golf Team is in the midst of a terrific season, with current 6-1 overall and 5-0 league records.  The team beat Bishop's soundly on Monday in its first ever match against the school, and to top if off, Sophomore Logan Moore shot the first hole-in-one in the history of the golf program.  Way to go, Firebirds!
