One Day Without Shoes at Pacific Ridge School Pacific Ridge students are invited to take part in One Day Without Shoes on April 10th. Sponsored by TOMS shoes and spearheaded on campus by 8th-grader Elle LeFebvre, the event asks people around the world to spend a day walking in someone else's bare feet. On April 10th, shoeless Pacific Ridge students, faculty, and staff will be asked to follow a designated path as well as a number of challenging terrains on campus. In Advisory period this week, students learned about the purpose of the event and about the dire health and educational consequences that can arise from not having shoes. Students are encouraged to pledge their participation with "pledge feet," cut-outs available in the Middle and Upper School front offices.

Last year's 10th-Grade Seed Grant winners, Kimberly Chang-Haines, Ciara Corbeil, and Kyla King, proposed a sack gardening project in Sukhpur, India in partnership with the Omprakash Foundation. We spoke with Kimberly and Kyla recently (Ciara was at Carnegie Hall with the A Cappella Ensemble) about the project and how it is developing.
How did you decide on Sukhpur? The village has a center, Deep Jyoti, that provides tutoring and health care to 250 children. We knew that if we worked through Deep Jyoti, we would have a better chance of getting families involved. Also, all 50 children in the community who were tested for anemia had positive results, a reflection on the health of the entire community. Fruit is currently only available several weeks per year, during mango season, and we wanted to provide constant access to fresh fruit and vegetables.
How do you stay connected with the project? It's a slow process! We work with a volunteer, Anoop Jain, from Deep Jyoti, who has intermittent internet and phone access.
What progress have you made on the project? We started a pilot sack garden in Sukhpur last summer and if that is successful we will work toward making more permanent sack gardens. We also created pamphlets that clearly illustrate how to create and care for the gardens, and have made contact with experts in sustainable agriculture who will be going to Sukhpur this summer. Ciara may also travel to India this summer to further the project.
What is a sack garden? It is a self-contained garden, in a sack. The sack is filled with rocks and soil, and then plants are grown through holes made in the top and sides of the sack. The rocks are formed into a column in the center of the sack so that water can effectively reach every plant growing. Because the sack doesn't lose much water, this type of garden maximizes resources.
