Seniors Mark 100 Days Until Graduation
Seniors celebrated the 100 days until graduation with a 100 Day Dinner on Tuesday, March 6th.  They were fêted with toasts from Dr. Ogle and Dr. Mullady, and enjoyed a slideshow that revealed their progression from ninth grade to the present.  "It's a great tradition," said Dr. Ogle, "The night gives the seniors a moment to consider a huge transition for them, their teachers, and their families.  It signifies that it is time to begin celebrating who they are now and to solidify the relationships that will carry them into the future."

Faculty Present on Service Learning at NAIS Conference
Faculty members Alison Behr, Todd Burckin, and Steve Le participated in a three-hour workshop at last weekend's NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools) conference in Seattle.  The workshop, entitled "Taking Service Learning to a Higher Level,"  showcased different schools' service learning programs and gave time for school administrators and program directors to exchange ideas and feedback.  "We found that our Service Learning program is innovative among peer schools," said Mr. Le.  "It has time built into the day and resources built into the budget, all of which allow faculty and students to design and implement an inventive and effective program."  The group returned from the conference both pleased to have shared the Service Learning program's achievements with colleagues and eager to set new goals as the program evolves.

Curricular Adventures

Seventh graders are beginning Trimester 3 with a unit on immigration.  They will visit Border Field State Park next week, and then follow up with a border debate project in English as they read Breaking Through by Francisco Jiminez.  In Spanish and French classes, students will look at countries that share a border; in science, they will study population movements; and in Social and Community Studies they will complete a related geography unit.
Service Learning in the Field

The Service Learning group Playing for a Difference, in collaboration with the charitable organization Grassroots Soccer, held a 3v3 soccer tournament on Sunday.  50 young people came out to play, squaring off three against three on shortened fields for mini games.  The tournament winners earned Grassroots Soccer t-shirts and bragging rights.  Said Coach Michael Chirgwin, an adviser for the group, "It was a great way to have some fun, to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS in Africa, and to raise money for a great cause."  The event brought in $1,000, which the group will use to donate soccer equipment to schools in South Africa.  Members of Playing for a Difference form long-term relationships with Sports for Exceptional Athletes (S4EA) while raising awareness about HIV and AIDS through Grassroots Soccer.  To learn more about Playing for a Difference, contact Mr. El Alam at NElAlam@pacificridge.org.  To see a photo montage of Sunday's 3v3 event, click here.
