Singin' in the Rain
Brings Crowds and Laughter

Appreciative audiences enjoyed a roaring good time when Pacific Ridge students staged three performances of Singin' in the Rain at Star Theatre in Oceanside last weekend.  In a production that included not just singing and dancing, but also student-produced silent movies, young thespians told a story of the emergence of "talkies," or talking films, in the 1920s.  The entire production, from set construction to publicity, was run by students, with expert guidance from Director Alison Trattner and Musical Director Steve Dziekonski.  A heartfelt "Thank you!" goes to the parents who toiled so hard behind the scenes to make the musical a success, and to Ms. Trattner and Mr. Dziekonski for their artistic vision, direction, and skill.

Fifty-seven Middle and Upper School students competed in this year's San Diego Regional Science Olympiad, in both Division B (7th-9th grade) and Division C (10th-12th grade).  Division B competitors placed 12th overall, and Division C students finished 10th overall, earning a trophy for their performance on February 18th.  Team trophies are awarded to the top ten schools, and individual awards are given to the top 20 students in each event.  Teacher and Science Olympiad adviser Raj Mudaliar was thrilled with the team result: "We compete against independent and public schools who bring contingents of 90 students or more, and countless coaches, to the event.  This is quite a victory for our school."  Thank you to Mrs. Mudaliar, and to the Pacific Ridge parents and faculty members who donated their time and expertise as coaches for this event.  Congratulations to all 57 Pacific Ridge students who took part in this year's Science Olympiad, and whose participation was critical to the each team's final standing.  A special compliment goes to the following students for their award-winning projects:

Curricular Adventures

On February 27th, students in Upper School Health class welcomed Dr. Kurt Matthews, a pathologist with Scripps Hospital, who talked to the class about the connection between smoking, drugs, alcohol and disease.  Dr. Matthews brought in organs that had been removed because of cancer and other diseases, and invited students to handle and inspect them.  Students were intrigued by the presentation, and left with a very concrete impression of how life habits affect one's health and well-being.  Thank you Dr. Matthews for your informative and eye-opening visit!
