Fall Fest Gives Autumnal Delight
Pacific Ridge School family and friends gathered on Saturday, October 22nd for the yearly Fall Fest celebration. All the favorite standbys were there: the bake sale sold out in a blink, the pumpkin patch promised some festively decorated doorsteps, and the dunk tank kept brave faculty and staff volunteers wet for a while.  The bouncies, new this year, were a kid favorite.  Thank you to everyone who came out to enjoy the fun and support our Service Learning groups in their educational and fundraising efforts.  A big round of applause goes to all of the generous volunteers, the students who worked to hard and the dedicated staff for coming together to make Fall Fest such a great success!

Kids enjoy one of the bouncies.

Students and Staff Enjoy Field Day

Team Blue and Team Black, made up of a combination of students, faculty, and staff, squared off in a series of fierce competitions on Field Day last Friday.  Each team gave its all in a Tug of War, Chicken Toss, Many-Legged Race, a relay race, and a soccer ball velocity station where a radar gun measured how fast participants could kick the ball.  The incentive?  Field Day Cup, which the Blue Team took home to the main office, and popsicles for all at the end of the day.  Says Athletic Trainer Casey Wheel, who organized the event, "it was a silly, active, fun day where everyone let loose."

The chicken toss is serious business!

Reminder:
2011-2012 Faculty/Parent Education Series

Again this year, members of the Pacific Ridge School faculty and staff will gather with up to 30 parents at a time for Harkness discussions about education and adolescents.  Before each session, participants will be given an article to read and/or a video clip to view.  At the meeting, parents and Pacific Ridge faculty and staff members will meet as one large group, break up into two smaller Harkness groups, and then reconvene to determine a list of takeaways from the discussion.  Those conclusions will then be shared with the rest of the school community.

Only 120 total spaces are available, so be sure to rank your order of session preference via survey monkey by clicking here

Curricular Adventures

This week on Pacific Ridge School's weekly Magic Monday, a number of 8th graders had the chance to teach one of their special skills, while the rest of the 8th grade acted as their pupils.  Students taught and were instructed in dance, cake decorating, improvisational acting, chess, meditation, remote control airplane flying, Tae Kwon Do, and Magic the Gathering (a card game).  The day's activities underscored the 8th-grade emphasis on "Habits of Mind," 16 thinking attributes that encourage creative and intelligent approaches to problem solving and acting in the world.  Students being taught were asked to "listen with understanding and empathy" and to "be open to continuous learning."  Those who took on the role of teacher "took responsible risks" by putting themselves in their teachers' shoes.  They chose their lessons and prepared lesson plans in advance.  Sound heady?  With students at the helm, Magic Monday turned out to be magically fun!

Service Learning in the Field

On Thursday, October 20th, Middle School Service Learning group Animal Allies set up a studio at the Carlsbad County Animal Shelter and took photos of dogs in costume as part of the shelter's Halloween adoption promotion.
