Ninth-Grade Students Prepare a "Local Lunch" On Monday, September 26th, ninth graders completed a "Local Lunch" project for history class. Working in small groups, students prepared lunch for themselves and one community guest using entirely local (defined as within San Diego county) food. Each group also provided an annotated menu and map that described and located the foods used, as well as a collection of encounter and data sheets logging experiences in the search. The project informed students' current study of the Agricultural Revolution in the ancient world, and helped them consider a number of questions about the relationship between food and civilization. Among those questions was: "Why does human history start with farming?"

Service Learning in the Field

Throughout the year, students in the "Solutions" Middle School Service Learning group visit and learn directly from local businesses and non-profits with commitments to environmentalism, sustainability, and community outreach. Last week, the group walked to Lund Real Estate nearby campus, where members toured Mr. Lund's LEED platinum office and learned about his "green team" (members of the family business). Students came away excited by the idea that a business can be both sustainable and profitable. They were also inspired by Mr. Lund's emphasis on being a "great citizen."

This past summer, Strength & Conditioning Coach Casey Wheel participated in a mentorship with the Seattle Sounders, a professional soccer team, and a conference sponsored by Perform Better, a fitness equipment supplier. Both experiences provided her with knowledge and creative ideas that will help her produce the most efficient and productive program for our athletes. She writes in an email: "I have already used different ideas and concepts in the workout programs this year."
