Dr. Aronow's Springtime SafetyTips!

Bicycle Safety

  • A helmet protects your child from serious injury and should be worn on every bike ride. Many accidents happen on driveways, sidewalks, and bike paths, not just on streets. And remember, wearing a helmet at all times helps children develop the helmet habit. Children learn best by observing you. Whenever you ride, put on your helmet.
  • When purchasing a helmet, look for a label that says the helmet meets the CPSC safety standard.
  • A helmet should sit level on the head, not tipped forwards or backwards.  The strap should be securely fastened, and the helmet should not move in any direction. A helmet's sizing pads can help improve the fit.
  • Do not push your child to ride a two-wheeled bike until they are ready. Stick with coaster (foot) brakes until your child is older and more experienced before moving to a bike with hand brakes.
  • Take your child with you when you shop for a bike, so he or she can try it out. The value of a properly fitting bike far outweighs the value of surprising your child with a new one. Buy the right size bike, not one your child has to "grow into." Oversized bikes are especially dangerous.

Fun in the Sun

Babies Under Six Months:

  • Avoid sun exposure.
  • Dress in lightweight long pants, longsleeved shirts, and brimmed hats.
  • When adequate clothing and shade are not available, apply sunscreen with SPF15 or higher to small areas, such as face and hands.

Older Children:

  • Limit sun exposure between the peak intensity hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
  • On sunny and cloudy days use sunscreen with SPF15 or higher (titanium dioxide/zinc oxide) and a physical barrier (sun protection clothing) that protects against UVB and UVA rays.
  • Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or after swimming or sweating.

Heat Stress

  • Whenever high heat and humidity reach critical levels, the intensity of activities lasting 15 minutes or more should be reduced .
  • Children should be well-hydrated. During an activity, drinking is recommended every 20 minutes (5 oz. of cold tap water or a flavored sports drink for a child weighing 90 lbs., and 9 oz. for an adolescent weighing 130 lbs.) even if the child does not feel thirsty.
  • Clothing should be light-colored and lightweight.
  • At the beginning of a strenuous exercise program or after traveling to a warmer climate, the intensity and duration of exercise should be limited initially and then gradually increased during a period of 10 to 14 days.

Bug Safety

  • Avoid areas where insects nest or congregate, such as stagnant pools of water, uncovered foods and gardens where flowers are in bloom.
  • Combination sunscreen/insect repellent products should be avoided. Sunscreen needs to be reapplied every two hours, but insect repellent should not be reapplied.
  • Use insect repellents containing DEET when needed to prevent insect related diseases (such as ticks and mosquitoes, which transmit Lyme Disease and West Nile Virus).
  • The current CDC/AAP recommendation for children over two months of age is to use 10-30 % DEET (10% DEET provides two-hour protection, 30% DEET provides five-hour protection). DEET should not be used on children under two months of age. Wash off repellent when indoors. Picaridin 5-10% (a DEET alternative) has become available in the U.S.
  • Don't use scented soaps, perfumes or hair sprays on your child.
  • To remove a visible stinger from skin, gently back it out by scraping it off horizontally with a credit card or your fingernail.

Office Updates

  • Well Visits - Please remember that your child requires a current well visit in order to fill out forms for camps, sports teams, or school.  If your child will need a well visit this summer, we encourage you to call as soon as possible. We offer more appointments in the summer for well visits, but they fill up quickly.

Call 734.475.4500 to schedule your child's well visit today!

  • Green Forms - If you think your child will need a "green" or sports form, please give our nurses at least 24 hours notice to complete these for your child.
  • Prescription Refills - We also ask that you give us 24-hour notice for prescription refills.
  • Updating Forms - Next time you are in the office, we'll ask you to update your insurance information, addresses, emails and phone numbers. Keeping this information current is critical for us to provide your child with the best of care.
  • New Triage Service - In May, we will begin working with Spectrum Health as our new after hours pediatric triage service.
  • Parking Lot - During the week of May 16, the office parking lot will be under construction. We will ask patients to park in the Church of Christ lot directly east of the office.

Is your child's car seat correctly installed? In order for a car seat to be effective, if must be installed properly. If you aren't sure, you are not alone. It will feature child passenger safety technicians who will check that your car seats and booster seats are correctly installed. The one-on-one, 20-minute sessions allow enough time for the technicians to fully inspect your car seats, provide safety information and answer questions. We will schedule 20 minutes for each car seat/booster seat in your car.

Grant Announcement for Area Preschools

Moore Pediatrics invites area preschools to apply for grants for the 2011-2012 school year. The grants (up to $200) help implement activities to increase children's exposure to fresh fruits and vegetables. Possible grants might include funding to cover the cost of starting a vegetable garden, incorporating fresh fruits and vegetables into daily meals or sending a teacher to a workshop. If you are interested in applying, please call the office for more details at 734.475.4500. The deadline to apply is July 15 and grants will be awarded by August 1, 2011.

In 2010, Moore Pediatrics awarded three nutrition grants to three area preschools. The Chelsea Community Preschool educated children and families about food groups and healthy eating. The children tried a variety of healthy foods and the parents learned about proper portion sizes, good nutrition and integrating daily exercise. Lambs of our Savior Preschool read the book, "Growing Vegetable Soup" and then made and ate their own vegetable soup. The Chelsea Children's Cooperative Preschool compiled "Try It Day" Parent Handbooks that presented facts, recipes and planning activities about different fruits and vegetables (such as planting a pizza garden with your child).

This program is part of our ongoing commitment to help families develop the tools for lifelong health, including nutrition and fitness.
