Focus on Giving: Dr Aronow's Haircut

Below is a story from Dr. Aronow about growing her hair in order to donate 9 inches of hair to an organization that makes wigs for children and in the process sharing the benefits of giving with her children.

"When I first learned of the organization Locks of Love I knew it was something I wanted to participate in. Locks of Love helps children suffering from medical hair loss. Their mission is "to return a sense of self-confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children."  Many of these children have lost their hair because of a medical problem called alopecia, an autoimmune disorder, or after chemotherapeutic treatments for cancer.

Initially, the idea of donating my hair was about me helping others "feel better".  But after my donation, I realized that this process helped me "feel better" too.  I was honored to give this meaningful gift to a child.  I also "felt great" talking to my children about giving something of yourself to help someone else. They watched as my hair grew longer, we visited the Locks of Love website together, and my children asked me a lot of questions.  The lesson of "giving" is an important one to teach our children. If we all give, whether it is time, money, or hair to help each other, our world will thrive and become a better place to live."

Other ways to teach and share the gift of giving with your children

Here are a few websites we found that might give you a few ideas about how to show our children that it is possible for each of us, no matter how young we are or even though we are each just one person, to make an impact and to learn that helping others helps ourselves too.

Receiving: Give Your Family the Gift of a Theater Experience

As you are thinking about what to put under the Christmas tree or next to the menorah, consider giving the gift of a family outing.  Here are a few area organizations that offer reasonably priced, professional entertainment suitable for the whole family:

Jackson Symphony Orchestra has a free Family Concert on January 31 and a Music Fair on Sunday Feb. 2. For more details, visit their website.

Wild Swan Theatre performs new productions almost every month on the campus of Washtenaw Community College. For more details, visit their website.

Michigan Theater in downtown Ann Arbor presents a series of live performances through their Not Just For Kids Series. For more details, visit their website.

Another great way to experience a live performance with your family is to check out your local high school performance schedule.

 Michigan Reads
We just learned from a librarian friend that the state of Michigan has a special program to help promote early literacy during those oh-so-important years between 0 and 5 years.  It's part of the "Michigan Reads" program and is called the "One State, One Preschool Book" program.

This year the book is Big Chickens by Leslie Helakowski.  You can check out the book the next time you are in the office. We have placed a copy in the waiting room and in each of the exam rooms.

To learn more about this book and the Michigan Reads program, visit their website.
