Immunization Update
In an effort to keep your children as healthy as possible and protected from preventable communicable diseases, the American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended some changes to the immunization schedule and added some new immunizations.
At age 5, we will be adding a varicella (chicken pox) booster to the kindergarten shots, which currently include DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis or "whooping cough", IPV (polio) and MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella).
We will be immunizing your child between the ages of 11-13 years with a vaccine called Tdap, which includes tetanus, diphtheria and acellular pertussis (whooping cough). It replaces the tetanus/diphtheria "booster". Your child will also be immunized at this visit with the Menactra vaccine, which protects against meningococcal meningitis.
In addition, girls 11 years of age and older are recommended to receive the HPV series, which protects them from 4 strains of the human papilloma virus, the virus that causes 98% of cervical cancers and genital warts. This 3 shot series is given over a 6 month period.
If you have any questions at all about your child's immunization status or this new schedule, please don't hesitate to contact our office.
