Slip, Slop, Slap

Sun Basics from the American Cancer Society:

Slip! On a Shirt. Protect your skin with clothing.
Slop! On Sunscreen. Use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher.
Slap! On a Hat. Wear a hat with a wide brim. Your ears, neck, and face get a lot of sun.

According to a recent article in Lancet (a well respected British medical journal), staying out of the sun and wearing protective clothing offer better protection than sunscreen.

What is the American Academy of Pediatrics saying about Summer Safety?

The American Academy of Pediatrics now advises that sunscreen use on babies less than 6 months old is not harmful on small areas of a baby's skin, such as the face and back of the hands. But your baby's best defense against sunburn is avoiding the sun or staying in the shade.

The American Academy of Pediatrics advises that insect repellant containing DEET should not be applied to infants younger than 2 months and parents should always apply the insect repellant for children of all ages to ensure that they do not get any on their hands or face.
Annual Physicals and Your Child

Why do we recommend annual physicals for your child?

After a child's second birthday, we recommend a yearly visit for several reasons:

● it is an opportunity to identify problems early;

● many summer camps, sports activities, and schools require a health form from your child's physician, and we can only fill one out if we have done a physical in the previous year;

● it allows us to collect up-to-date information that can be used to triage phone calls and, potentially, reduce the number of office visits throughout the year; and

● it helps establish our relationship with your child, so that it is easier for your child during times of sickness.

What happens during an annual physical?

During the annual well visit, Dr. Moore. Dr. Aronow, or Andy will:

take a health history, which consists of a series of questions concerning your child's physical and psychological health;

measure your child's height and weight, and plot those measurements on your child's growth curve;

check blood pressure; heart rate and pulses in neck, groin and feet; neck, armpits, and groin for swollen lymph nodes; heart, lungs and abdomen for normal sounds; reflexes; teeth, gums, tongue and throat; eyes, ears, nose and skin; fine and gross motor development; and spinal alignment for signs of scoliosis.

● perform screening tests, such as hearing and vision, as recommended;

● discuss health promotion activities, such as nutrition and exercise.

If you think your child will need a health form for a summer activity or to start school in the fall, we encourage you to call the office early.  Appointments fill up quickly in the summer, and we would prefer to schedule you at a time that is convenient for you and with the provider of your choice.

Second Annual Summer Field Trip

Join your pediatrician on a trip to an organic farm in Grass Lake, MI on Thursday August 2.  We'll take an edible tour of the farm, visit the chickens, and have light refreshments in the shade.  Space is limited to 15 children and their parents.  There is a $15/ family fee for this activity; proceeds for the outing are donated to the farm in appreciation of their hospitality.  Please let us know if you are interested.  We'll reserve you and your child/ren a spot and give you a permission slip to return.

Call the office at 734.475.4500 or e-mail Misha at misha@mykidsdoc.org to register.

Summer Reading and Links to your Local Library

Now that school is ending for the year, you can help your child maintain his or her reading level through the summer by encouraging your child to read everyday.
Some of our favorite bits of advice for helping our children include: encourage them to write letters to a distant (or not so distant) relative; keep books in the car or in your purse and read to your children while waiting; encourage sources of reading other than books such as food labels or sports scores in the newspaper; and participate in your local library summer reading program.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has teamed up with Reading is Fundamental to offer a reading check list for children of all ages.  It helps you assess your child's reading level and what you can do to encourage your child.

Missed Appointment Policy

Effective January 1, 2007, patients of Moore Pediatrics and Associates will be charged a $25.00 missed appointment fee.  If you know that you will miss your child's appointment, you can avoid this fee by calling the office prior to your child's appointment.  This fee is not billable to your insurance and must be paid prior to being seen at your next visit.

We appreciate how rarely we invoke this policy. Please contact the office with any questions you have about this or any other policies.
