Week of July 16, 2012

Greetings!

I am very sad to report that William Helwig passed away on July 12 from colon cancer. One of this country's foremost enamellists, he lectured and taught workshops here and abroad. He served as juror, author, curator, conference chairman, and co-founder of Glass on Metal, the magazine of the Enamelist Society.

Quoting enamellist Melissa EarlenBach Searle:

His work constantly evolved; he never stopped inventing and reinventing fresh approaches to enameling. He regarded his work as being, "...about thought and an extension of the soul." His accomplishments are many and his enamels have been exhibited widely.

A large commissioned work, done for Scripps Howard Publications, is pictured here.
