Greetings!
Dee Fontans has made a Hip Hop video called "The Jeweler" inspired by jewelry-making techniques. You really should check it out on YouTube.
As many of know, Dee is an artist, fashion designer, enamellist, jeweler, performance artist, producer, educator and goldsmith. Her influence on the Wearable Art "scene" in Western Canada has been very strong. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation "Artspots" program created a series of thirty-second pieces on her practice which have aired nationally in Canada since 2006. She was also a presenter at the SNAG conference in 2004.

Rock Vault is a new jewelry initiative launched by the British Fashion Council in February during British Fashion Week.
Curated by Jeweler Stephen Webster, ten jewelers were selected to showcase Britain's innovative fine jewelry talent.
Also exhibiting alongside the designers were the five finalists from The Palladium Jewelry Design Competition for which MA students from Central Saint Martins were invited to create a design concept. The New York Times took notice.

Seek, a new international biennial
Michael David Sturlin shared a very clever TED talk on SNAG's Facebook page. It is a terrific 17 minute commentary on art, by artist Shea Hembrey.
Hembrey produced Seek, a new international biennial, and its catalog, "Seek: 100 in 2011-The Inaugural Exhibition."

5 x 5
A new program called "5 x 5" is launching in Washington, DC. Five curators each received a $100,000 grant from the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities. In turn, they used this money to fund five artists or artist teams to create 25 public art installations.
The installations are all temporary, intended to enliven vacant, dormant, and open spaces while bringing cutting edge creativity and artistic expression to neighborhoods around the District. The twenty-five installations will be unveiled during the National Cherry Blossom Festival, March 20-April 27.

TODAY is the last day to enter SNAG's Juried Student Exhibition Deadline March 12
"FUSION": As temperatures increase, materials and objects begin to melt as they change from solid to liquid under the intense heat. The process often results in the joining together of two or more elements to form a single entity. The intensity of educational programs often leads to similar blending of ideas, techniques or materials.
The 2012 SNAG Juried Student Exhibition will focus on fusion... showcasing the best student work from college and university metalsmithing and jewelry programs across North America. Jurors will make selections from a full range of metal and jewelry work, including traditional and non-traditional approaches, promoting innovation and success in the next generation of metals and jewelry artists.
Jurors: Lynn Cool, French Thompson, Michael Parrett. Click here to access the Prospectus. Held at the conference hotel, Westin Kierland Resort & Spa.
