Dana Singer, Executive Director
Week of March 5, 2012

Greetings!

Every year we ask the candidates running for president and the board of directors to respond to a list of questions (this is separate from asking the members to submit questions for the presidential candidates to respond to). By way of example, one question is "What expertise, experience and strengths will you bring to the position?"

We have published all these questions and answers on our website, set up so you can easily compare all the candidates' responses to each question, one at a time, without having to flip back and forth between pages.

For Michael Dale Bernard and Susan Skoczen, the two candidates running for the seat on the Nominations and Elections Committee, you'll see their bios but no specific questions for them to answer.
Bolo Tie Competition
The New Mexico Metalsmiths Guild is hosting a Bolo Tie Competition. The competition offers both merchandise awards and the possibility of inclusion at a show at the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian, Fall 2012.

The 1st annual NMMG Metals Competition coincides with the centennial anniversary of the statehood of New Mexico. Since the state tie of New Mexico is the bolo, it is only fitting that NMMG's first is a Bolo Competition.

The competition is open to all metalsmiths working and/or studying in the field of metals. All entries must be wearable, made by your own hands and must be of your own design. Go to artistfront.com for the prospectus and to enter.
ALLOY: U Mass Dartmouth Metals Symposium  ALLOY
The graduate students of the metals program are holding an intercollegiate  metals symposium April 14-15, which brings together sculpture and metalsmithing. Their line up of speakers includes blacksmith Elizabeth Brim, sculptor Kitty Wales, and silversmith Joost During.

7th Annual Halstead Business Development Grant
Halstead Bead Inc. invites new silver jewelry designers to enter its 7th annual grant competition for artisans in the industry. The focus on silver is new to the grant in 2012, due to the volatile metals costs. Other accent materials are welcome, however the artist's primary metal medium should be silver.

The winner of the 2012 business development grant will receive a prize package including $6,000 in cash and merchandise. Submit applications between April 15 and June 9. <halsteadbead.com>

"Mitsuro-hikime: A Casting Wax" Technical Article We've just published a technical article by Susan Weiss about using mitsuro-hikime wax for casting.

Mitsuro-hikime is a pliable wax, which behaves like taffy and during processing develops a unique linear pattern.

Most effective in simple designs, Mitsuro-hikime will fold, curl, intertwine and give surface detail. Along with these interesting properties come some technical challenges.

In Susan's article she provides the wax formula and the process for designing Mitsuro-hikime, how to prepare the wax from its ingredients, and gives the names of suppliers for purchasing the ingredients.

SNAG Juried Student Exhibition Deadline March 12
"FUSION": As temperatures increase, materials and objects begin to melt as they change from solid to liquid under the intense heat.  The process often results in the joining together of two or more elements to form a single entity.  The intensity of educational programs often leads to similar blending of ideas, techniques or materials.

The 2012 SNAG Juried Student Exhibition will focus on fusion... showcasing the best student work from college and university metalsmithing and jewelry programs across North America.  Jurors will make selections from a full range of metal and jewelry work, including traditional and non-traditional approaches, promoting innovation and success in the next generation of metals and jewelry artists.

Jurors: Lynn Cool, French Thompson, Michael Parrett. Click here to access the Prospectus.

Held at the conference hotel, Westin Kierland Resort & Spa.
