Week of January 16, 2012 Greetings!
I can't stop thinking about the Joanna Gollberg article in the new issue of Ornament and highly recommend reading it.
She talks about her transition from making art jewelry to making designer jewelry. To give you only a snippet, while she refrains from making "harsh delineations between terms like art jewelry, designer jewelry and fashion jewelry--viewing it all as part of a sliding scale"--she notes, "The focus to me in the designer jewelry world is more about being a real business, not about being an artist." Gollberg does not see a great difference in the jewelry itself, to her it's more about how it's marketed. I welcome a conversation about the article and hearing your opinions on these topics on SNAG's Facebook page.
As we formulate SNAG's next strategic plan, following the board of directors' retreat last fall, one of SNAG's clearly articulated goals is to meet the needs of our members who are making work to sell, whether wholesale or retail. You'll hear throughout 2012 and beyond about programming that will address these issues, in addition to our ongoing commitment to advancing all studio work. As you've seen already I will be using this weekly newsletter to publicize opportunities for the full range of work being made.

Renwick Gallery Symposium Call for Papers
Coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the Renwick Gallery, "Nation Building: Craft and Contemporary American Culture" will examine craft's increasingly urgent role within contemporary American culture. Paper submissions from senior and emerging scholars are invited for this symposium. Scholarship is invited that complicates our understanding of modern craft as a response to mass culture, and that probes the evolution of the field beyond the studio movement. They welcome investigations of post-studio practice, craft education, "craftivism," DIY, and Slow movements, converging practices in craft, design, and contemporary art, and shifting attitudes towards technology, skill, and materiality. Email a two-page, double-spaced abstract (300-500 words) and short C.V. to Nicholas R. Bell, curator, Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum at CraftSymposium@si.edu. Proposals must be received by April 2, 2012. |
