Next Issue of Metalsmith | | Watch for the new issue of Metalsmith to arrive in the next couple of weeks. This gorgeous piece on the cover is by John Nels Hatleberg, the foremost diamond counterfeiter and creator of beautiful jeweled objects.
The issue includes articles on "The Hand as Subject and Site," from the late Polly Ullrich, and the modernist art jewelry movement, by Jeannine Falino. Among other pieces, "View" is about "Abhushan: Design Dialogues in Jewelery," the international jewelry summit held in New Delhi early this year, and "In Production" looks at the ever-evolving career of Tom Mann.

| The lecture series at SOFA Chicago in November this year is top notch. SNAG is sponsoring three talks:  Three exceptional emerging artists, Laura Prieto-Velasco (left; Chicago), Catherine Allen (center; Canada), and Deborah Rudolph (right; Germany), discuss the development of their jewelry. "Thinking Organically in a Digital Age" - Doug Bucci discusses how the confluence of art, technology and medicine unite in his jewelry. "Venus Adorned" - Bruce Metcalf considers the ancient roots of adornment, particularly concerning sexuality, and how traditional concerns manifest in his own brooches and necklaces.

Call for Entries CU/29, November 18 Deadline
| | In conjunction with SNAG's 2012 conference in Phoenix, Arizona, Mesa Art Center is presenting the juried exhibition, "CU|29: Contemporary Work in Copper" from April 6 to August 12, 2012. Juried by metalsmith David Huang, this exhibition will feature contemporary work made primarily of copper (at least 75%). Open to any artist working in copper, and encompasses jewelry, vessels, sculpture and wall pieces. More information about submissions. Deadline November 18, 2011.
The exhibition will also highlight exquisite copper vessels created in Santa Clara del Cobre, Mexico, borrowed from several private collections.

A Focus on Contemporary Silver at MAD

"A Focus on Contemporary Studio Silver in Britain Today" will feature illustrated presentations by three of England's most prominent and accomplished artists in silver: Rod Kelly, ornamental hammering (chasing); Jane Short, enamellist; and Hiroshi Suzuki, raising silver to create hollow forms.
The presentations will be preceded by an introductory talk by Rosemary Ransome-Wallis, Curator of Collections at the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, one of the most historic guilds of craftsman in the world, and followed by a Q&A session and a wine and cheese reception. SNAG and Metalsmith are co-sponsors of the event in collaboration with MAD, November 10 at the Museum of Arts and Design.
