Remembering Polly Ullrich

Polly UllirchPolly Ullrich, an established independent art critic and journalist based in Chicago, died in a car accident on July 6. Polly was a frequent contributor to Metalsmith; she had already submitted her last article for publication in the upcoming October issue.

Polly has written numerous articles related to contemporary art and craft in Sculpture, frieze, American Craft, KeramikMagazin, Bridge, Fiberarts, Surface Design Journal, The New Art Examiner, Ceramics Art and Perception, and of course Metalsmith. She lectured about art, served on panels and juried and curated exhibitions.

She will be remembered for her kindness, passion, and knowledge of the field.

2011 Professional Development Seminar Gains Momentum

Drop Shadow

The five segments of the 2011 Professional Development Seminar are all available on SNAG's website: Niche Marketing, Digital Image Extensions, Photography in Flux (Photographers' and Editors' Perspectives), and How to Build a Better Drop Shadow. In just the last month they have attracted 6,800 views.
Metalsmith's Exhibition in Print
Metalsmith 31 4The 2011 juried Exhibition in Print has just mailed out. The jurors were metalsmith Lola Brooks and curator Cindi Strauss. Work featured in this issue will be exhibited at The Metal Museum later this year.

The digital version will be delivered to you in a few days. Many of our advertisers have added live url links to their ads -- use them so they know their advertising is working for them.
At the Frontier's Edge: The Arts & Crafts Movement in Denver & Environs, September 21-25
Todd ReedThe work of jeweler Todd Reed exemplifies ongoing manifestations of the Arts & Crafts movement, as does the focus on metalwork in the conference, "At the Frontier's Edge," produced by Initiatives in Art and Culture; SNAG/Metalsmith is a co-sponsor.

Reed is both a speaker and host of a special evening event. The frontier created freedom by breaking the bonds of custom, offering new experiences, and calling out new institutions and activities; the nascent Arts & Crafts movement in the Mountain States did just that. Explore ongoing manifestations of this movement and how the "frontier spirit" continues to affect the art, including the work of architects Daniel Liebeskind and Brad Cloepfil.

Archibald KnoxAmong other speakers are: Nancy J. Blomberg, Native Arts Department (DAM); Anita J. Ellis, Cincinnati Art Museum; Hugh Grant, Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art; Thomas Jacob Noel, professor of History, University of Colorado; Cheryl Robertson, independent scholar, curator, and museum consultant; Robert C. Rust, national Arts and Crafts design consultant; and Thomas Brent Smith, Petrie Institute of Western American Art (DAM).

Downloadable conference brochure. Register for full conference here. Student and one- and two-day passes available.

Special rates at the Brown Palace Hotel ($219) and the affiliated Comfort Inn ($119 and $139); identify yourself as Arts & Crafts participants or with Initiatives in Art and Culture. The room blocks will be held until August 22 (Brown Palace, 800-321-2599), and September 5 (Comfort Inn, 800-237-7431). Reservations must be made via phone.
