About Our Practice
While no one likes going to the doctor, we are dedicated to providing the best clinical experience a medical practice can offer. Our core practice is Internal Medicine.
We are all going to age, thus our philosophy is to provide services that help prevent disease as well as treat them. We want our patients to live long healthy lives, feel good about themselves and enjoy life. By incorporating lifestyle management strategies such as nutritional counseling we can help our patients achieve these goals.
We provide cosmetic skincare for patients who desire these services. We believe all of our patients are beautiful just the way they are, but if you would like to enhance your appearance we provide a full range of cosmetic skincare products and procedures. Procedures include Botox, Juvederm, Radiesse, IPL, Laser, and light chemical peels. All of our injectable procedures are performed by Dr. Bernstein.
Dr. Bernstein has an extensive background in pulmonary diseases where his major area of interest was asthma and exercise physiology. Twenty-five percent of the population suffer from allergies. In addition to allergy testing and in office consultation we provide allergy seminars and workshops for our patients as we believe patient education is the key to optimal success. We are uniquely qualified to provide asthma and allergy services to our patients because of Dr. Bernstein's pulmonary background.
Most importantly we want to provide an environment that makes our patients feel comfortable. We view our patients as an extension of our family. That is why there will always be someone to answer the phone, fit in emergency visits for same day appointments and we still make house calls.
From all of our staff, Rae, Shayla, Wendy, Kathy and myself we want to wish you good health and the happiest of holiday seasons

Insurance News
We are pleased to announce that we have submitted an application to participate with the Blue Cross Blue Shield HMO product Blue Choice. We have asked for this to be effective January1, 2009. We do not know how long it will take for Blue Cross/Blue Shield to make this effective. While this will benefit some of our patients, we are wary of the impact of having a flood of new patients to our office. We pride ourselves on being able to see patients the same day as well as our quick turnaround time on prescriptions, messages etc. We will thus have to limit our panel and the number of patients we accept with this plan. If you have questions please contact our office.

Internal Medicine: Genetic Testing
As many of you know, I recently attended a genetics conference at Harvard Medical School. There is no question in my mind that genetics will play a larger and larger role in how we will practice medicine in the future. Genetics will help us guide drug therapy and predict who will be at risk for certain diseases As such we are pleased to announce that our patients will have the opportunity to use their DNA to experience healthier living. We have partnered with Navigenics to arm our patients with genetic information gleaned from the Navigenics Health Compass.
The Navigenics Health Compass is a personalized health service that reveals your genetic predisposition to dozens of common medical conditions so that you and your doctor can use that knowledge to plan a healthier future.The information is compiled into a comprehensive report that allows you to work with Dr. Bernstein to reduce your healthcare risk. In contrast to other genetic testing companies 24/7 consultation is available from board certified genetic counselors. All testing is performed at a CLIA certified Lab. Your genetic profile will continue to be updated with new condition results and health information as the science advances. The Annapolis Allergy and Health Enhancement Center is one of only 30 private Health clinics along with the Mayo Clinic, Scripps Clinic, Cleveland Clinic and Duke Medical Center (through their executive physical program) offering this technology. For more information please contact our office.

What is new with Asthma? Could Asthma be an infectious disease? The answer is maybe. We have always known that infections with the organism mycoplasma pnuemoniae can predispose people to develop asthma. What is new is that chronic low level mycoplasma infections may be a reason for difficult to control asthma. Evidence suggests that treating patients with low dose erthromycin or zithromax can have a significant impact on improving asthma control in these patients.
More Asthma News;
The New NIH guidelines have been out over a year. Based on these guidelines it is apparent that about 30% of people with mild persistent asthma are under treated. Examples of this could be a patient with allergic rhinitis and persistent cough, recurrent respiratory infections, cough variant asthma or exercise induced asthma. The guidelines also suggest that if good control is maintained, medications should be gradually weaned. That is why frequent follow up and patient education are essential for effective treatment of asthma. If you have questions or would like to discuss the above please make an appointment.

nAesthetics and Skincare: Radiesse, a unique dermal filler
Aesthetics is a fun part of our practice. The key to a good outcome is good communication with patients so that we understand what they want and they understand what is needed to create an outstanding result. Using techniques to enhance certain features while diminishing others has the greatest impact on making the years magically disappear. I am excited about a new technique that has been developed for the dermal filler Radiesse. Radiesse can be combined with lidocaine (a topical anesthetic) which prevents the need for a nerve block and cuts the time of the procedure in half. The technique replaces the natural loss of volume from the fatpads underneath the eyes. This loss of volume is the reason we develop more prominent nasolabial folds and marionette lines. By addressing the process that actually causes our face to age dramatic results can be achieved. This creates a V shaped appearance to the face which is critical to obtain a younger appearance. Thus far our results have been outstanding.
In direct comparison studies of Radiesse vs. Juvederm and Restylene for treatment of nasolabial folds, patient satisfaction was 95% for Radiesse, 60% for restylane, and less than 50% for Juvederm. Radiesse lasts 1 year and Restylane and Juvederm last 6 months. 1 tube of Radiesse provides the volume of 2 tubes of Juvederm. We are currently offering Radiesse at the same price as Juvederm ($480). If you are looking for a younger appearance Radiesse may just fill the bill. Sign up for a complimentary skin consult or consider a cosmetic procedure gift certificate for the holidays today.
