Love, an Active Verb
"God is love" (1 John 4:16 -NIV) and, "No doubt about it! God is good - good to good people, good to the good-hearted." (Psalm 73:1-MSG)
Ruth was a selfless example of love and goodness. When both her father-in-law and her husband died, Ruth lovingly clung to her grief stricken mother-in-law, Naomi, and vowed to follow, comfort, and care for her 'until death'.
"Look," said Naomi, "your sister-in-law is going back to her people and her gods. Go back with her."
But Ruth replied, "Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me." (Ruth 1:15-17 -NIV)
God sees all, and rewards those who do 'good'; His loving favor in the life of Ruth is a great example. While gleaning remnants of grain from newly harvested fields for her and her mother-in-law, providentially she was 'noticed' by Boaz, a man of great wealth, who directed his servants to show respectful favor to Ruth.
"At this, (Ruth) bowed down with her face to the ground. She exclaimed, 'Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you notice me-a foreigner?' Boaz replied, 'I've been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband, how you left your father and mother and your homeland and came to live with a people you did not know before. The Lord repay your work, and a full reward be given by the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings you have come for refuge.' " (Ruth 2: 10-12 -NKJV)
Through God's sovereign love and favor, Boaz would soon become Ruth's soul mate, her loving husband, and ultimately included in the ancestry of Jesus Christ.
This Valentine's Day, let us remember to not just speak love, but to also show our love through deeds of kindness toward those we love. Someone, unseen by us, may be secretly watching, waiting and ready to reward us openly. Remember, the heart of the heavens is still perfect love.
"Everything we know about God's Word is summed up in a single sentence: Love others as you love yourself. That's an act of true freedom." (Gal 5:14 --MSG)
