Glimmers of Hope at the Iowa Caucus

ELCA Health

ELCA Pastor Russ Melby, Regional Director for Church World Service in Des Moines, reflects on his experience as an advocate in the fight against hunger and poverty at the recent Iowa caucus.  His experience is one example of the ways people of faith involve themselves in the work of advocacy not necessarily by prescribing a solution but by raising the issue so that the needs of people who are among the most vulnerable in our society may be seen as a priority by our elected leaders.

Synod Assembly Resolutions

Pr. Eric Carlson, Assistant to the Bishop

One avenue of access for congregations, conferences, synod organizational units and voting members to address issues and propose a plan for action is the resolution. Resolutions help organize the work of the assembly by clarifying important issues or concerns. Resolutions are first reviewed by the reference and counsel committee, which will make recommendations to the assembly to facilitate its work, but the resolutions belong to the assembly and may be amended, rejected,  or adopted after consideration by the voting members. Resolutions may be submitted until 45 days prior to the first day the assembly meets.  For the 2012 Synod Assembly, resolutions must be in the synod office by Tuesday, April 17, 2012.  Read More

ELCA World Hunger

Each NFL Super Bowl Sunday, many people host or attend parties with abundant food, friendship, and fellowship. At the same time, over 1 billion people around the world go hungry.  On Super Bowl Sunday, please join more than 2,000 Lutheran youth groups to do something to change all of that.  The Souper Bowl of Caring is a youth-led ecumenical and grassroots movement that unites youth under a single cause: to end hunger.
